April Bird of the Month: Beautiful bee-eatersEdit

Disagree if you must, but since the sight and sound of bee-eaters induces instant pleasurable feelings in all but the hardest of hearts I am inclined to award Bird of the Month status to the two European Bee-eater caught flying over a Willesden Green garden on the 21st, even though they weren’t twitchable. They are the only Bee-eaters recorded on the UK mainland so far this year.

Over the years there have been fewer than 30 reports of this undeniably beautiful near-passerine in the London area. The most recent previous London record was a single bird photographed by Magnus Andersson over Wimbledon Common in May last year. Other sightings in recent years include two birds over Betchworth Quarry in June 2015, 10 high over Chingford in May 2012, one heard over Southgate in May 2008 and one cavorting around the visitor centre at Rainham Marshes in May 2007.

Another notable near-passerine this month was a Wryneck flushed at Alexandra Park on the 24th — one of only a handful in the whole of the UK this month.

if it had been discovered at a more easily accessible site, my Bird-of-the-Month nomination might have been the Red-rumped Swallow that spent a couple of days at the permit-only Island Barn Reservoir (although it could be seen occasionally over the trees on the adjacent Molesey Heath NR). It was one of only a handful of Red-rumps seen in the UK this month.

Ducks, divers and grebes Edit

After a seven-week stay, Brent Reservoir’s drake Scaup was last reported on 1st Apr. Another (or perhaps the same bird finally on the move) was seen at Island Barn Reservoir on the same day. Early in the month two Red-breasted Merganser were at King George V Reservoir and two Ruddy Duck were again at the London Wetland Centre. Common Scoter bookended April, with one at Queen Mother Reservoir on the first day of the month and two at Rainham Marshes on the last.

From 13th to 23rd Apr, a Great Northern Diver in full summer plumage hung around Staines Reservoir and King George VI Reservoir, joined on the 16th by a Red-necked Grebe, also in summer plumage. A Slavonian Grebe reappeared at Staines Res on the 10th, and two were at Hilfield Park Reservoir on the 30th.

Big white birds and a big black bird Edit

A Cattle Egret was in Richmond Park on the 13th and a Great White Egret was seen flying over Woodberry Wetlands on the 25th. A White Stork passed over Pinner and Ruislip on the 19th and a Spoonbill was seen at Enfield Lock on the 29th.

A Black Kite soared over Stratford for several minutes at lunchtime on the 20th. Other birds of prey included the month’s only Osprey, seen at Gallions Reach on the same day.

Waders Edit

A Stone-curlew at Molesey Heath NR on the 18th was the first in London since a bird at Rainham Marshes last May. Although Rainham has not yet had a Stone-curlew this year, it hosted no fewer than 23 species of wader during April, including Grey Plover, Curlew Sandpiper, Ruff and Spotted Redshank. Elsewhere, a Temminck’s Stint was at Tyttenhanger GPs on the 30th.

Rare larids (and a stercorariid) Edit

A few white-winged gulls lingered through April. The second calendar year Glaucous Gull first seen on 23rd Mar at London Wetland Centre remained until 29th Apr, and Glaucs were also reported from three other sites. Iceland Gull were recorded at four sites late in the month and a Kittiwake was at KGV Reservoir from 28th Apr into May. A few Little Gull passed through the capital during the month and other passage larids included a small number of Sandwich Tern and Black Tern and larger numbers of Little Tern and Arctic Tern. An Arctic Skua flew past the London Wetland Centre on the 30th.

Passerines Edit

A flock of Waxwing (usually 20–30 but sometimes more) continued to hang around north London, mainly between Holloway and Hampstead Heath, and were last reported on the 19th. The only other April sightings were 15 at Rickmansworth on the 5th and eight in Richmond Park on the 14th and 18th.

A Lesser Whitethroat singing at Bow Creek Ecology Park on the 4th equalled the earliest record listed in ‘The Birds of London’. However, since the species is now known to overwinter occasionally in southern England, this bird was not necessarily a vanguard migrant. (A bird recorded in Highgate in March 2015 was certainly thought likely to have overwintered.) Walthamstow’s Siberian Chiffchaff last sang on the 9th, and Wood Warbler were heard singing in Dagenham and Danson Park on the 28th.

Pied Flycatcher were reported from a few sites, but no Spotted Flycatcher has yet been recorded this year. A Hooded Crow flew over Tyttenhanger GPs on the 17th, and Regent's Park had a visit from a Hawfinch on the 20th.

Finally, it’s good to see Corn Bunting hanging on in the London area. Two were singing at West Hyde (near Harefield) on the 1st, and birds were also recorded on more than one date at Crayford Marshes and Rainham Marshes

  • Molesey Heath: Possible Iberian Chiffchaff still singing in copse at NE end early morning (RBA) RBA are putting this out as an Iberian Chiffchaff, not possible. I am hearing from site that it is a mixed singing Chiffchaff. Is there anyone prepared to give an informed opinion on the sonogram and/or video/audio recording as to what this actually is? (confused of Walthamstow). There is recording on xeno canto and clip on You Tube; both sound convincing. Also responded today to Iberian Chiffchaff playback. The one I had at Broxbourne, on the 8th, and the Barnes (Steve Bacon also heard that singing) bird didn't have the chiffy flourish (on xeno canto) at the end, interesting! (Nick Croft) The song in the field today varied - soemtimes it sounded very good, while at other times it did it sort of backwards, with the trill followed by the chiff-chiff bit, rather than starting with a few chiffs and ending with the trill. There were also short snatches of Willow Warbler-like song coming from the area it was singing from, but I'm not sure it was the bird - there might have been a Willow Warbler in there too. It definitely responded to playback of Iberian Chiffchaff song by coming closer, looking around, singing more loudly and consistently singing the typical Iberian Chiffchaff-type song rather than any variations. In appaearnce, the face pattern looks fine, with a prominent supercilium, and I thought the wing projection looked longer than on a typical chiff, but it shows hardly any yellow. I guess detailed analysis of the sonogram will settle it, but in the meantime I think it's worth seeing (John Archer). Snatches of Willow Warb song are a good indicator of ICC according to the BB article. This bird does do so. Thanks for all the feedback, I've had time to check Xeno-Canto compare the video and audio of this bird, I'm afraid it wasn't quite ticking the boxes for me. Now I see RBA are putting it out as Chiffchaff or hybrid. (Less confused of Walthamstow); Stone Curlew nr old Field Common GP early-am but not since (per Surrey BC)

  • Wallington Garden: 1 Merlin/Peregrine/Hobby drifted SW in overcast conditions at 4:52pm. Also 1 Swallow and about 500 of the Beddington Farm Gulls over. Silhouette pics (terrible) here (Arjun Dutta) - I don't think that it is a Peregrine (800-1000g), as they are roughly twenty times heavier than your initial thought of a Swift (50g) & the photos show that the bird in question is not long enough in the wing to be a Hobby, so what does that leave? - well done AD - I think it's a Merlin - ask yourself why others refuse to comment? - It's either because they don't know, or lack the temerity to stick their necks out (JR) A shame that the conditions were so grey, and I couldn't get any better shots. (AD) I think this is a Peregrine - the tail is too short for Merlin and clearly rounded at the end in some of the shots. And isn't there a hint of white cheeks in a couple of the photos? Male Peregrines can somethimes look remarkably small (John Archer) A Merlin weighs on average, about 200 grams - a Peregrine is five times the size (JR) This bird is definitely not a Merlin. (Anon) FWIW, at this late stage and just to show I do have the temerity despite the risk of being castigated for incorrectly ID'ing a bird from a fuzzy photo- which happened to a friend of mine to a distressing degree- I shall venture to agree with JA that the photo shows a Peregrine and probably a male. I couldn't comment sooner as the link didn't work for me at the time (J.Wilczur).
