London's August highlights

Perhaps the bird of the month for August 2016 was the Pectoral Sandpiper found by Harry Lacey on 9th August at King George V Reservoir. Now a near-annual visitor to the London area, Pec Sand was last recorded 12 months ago at Beddington Farmlands.

Unfortunately, Harry’s bird didn’t linger to be twitched. But August was a great month for waders generally, with no fewer than 26 species recorded in total. Notable among them were Temminck’s Stint, Little Stint, Ruff and Wood Sandpiper, all four of which were present at Rainham Marshes on the 22nd and 23rd. Little Stint were also seen at Rye Meads and Staines Reservoir. Other interesting waders included Woodcock (Highgate, 2nd), Sanderling (KGV Reservoir, 6th), Spotted Redshank (Purfleet, 20th), Curlew Sandpiper (Purfleet, 23rd) and Bar-tailed Godwit (Barking Bay, 29th).

(Purfleet’s Curly Sand probably arrived in Britain as part of a huge influx on the 19th, when large flocks were found at several sites on the east coast before spreading out across the country. The biggest flock was an amazing 143 at Frampton Marsh, Lincolnshire, on the 21st.)

Other wetland birds

July’s White Stork lingered into August, mainly still seen at Beddington Farmlands but occasionally spotted in flight over other areas of South London. It was last reported on the morning of the 6th.

The year’s second London sighting of Glossy Ibis was on the 6th, when three birds flew over Buckhurst Hill. Later the same day, and again five days later, one was reported at Rainham Marshes (which was also where the year’s first Glossy turned up, on 13th May). Then on 16th Aug another (or the same?) Glossy arrived at King George V Reservoir and obligingly stayed until late the next day, when it flew off high southish. It was back again on the 21st but not seen again after that.

(Glossy Ibis were once very rare vagrants to the UK from the Mediterranean region. The earliest accepted London records are as recent as 1974, when a bird spent a month at Swanscombe Marsh, and 1977, when one hung around Totteridge Common for 20 weeks. Glossies are still rare, but records have increased significantly in recent years and at least one pair has attempted to breed in England.)

On the 21st, King George V Reservoir also featured four aquatic species that are usually only encountered as winter visitors — Pintail, Goldeneye, Smew and Red-necked Grebe. Also present was a Garganey, KGV being one of five London sites to record this summer visitor during the month.

Gulls and terns

Plenty of terns passed through the capital during the month, mainly seen along the Thames downriver from the Woolwich Barrier. The star bird was a Roseate Tern reported from Rainham on 18th August — the first in London since 24th April. But the stand-out venue for terns in general was Gallions Reach, with reports of large numbers of Sandwich Tern, Arctic Tern and Common Tern — including a total of 110 or more Sarnies on the 27th. (This seems to be a London record: according to The Birds of London, the largest previous London flock was 90 birds at Barn Elms Reservoirs on 15th Sep 1968.)

On 19th Aug, Gallions Reach also recorded two Black Tern, and on the same day a flock of 21 was seen south of the river at Beddington Farmlands. A sixth tern species was reported at the end of the month, when three Little Tern flew upriver past Purfleet on the 28th and two more passed Barking Bay the next day.

Little Gull were seen at three sites during the month, and there were as usual a few reports of Caspian Gull and Mediterranean Gull. Purfleet was the "purfect" place for Yellow-legged Gull, with regular sightings of up to 34 birds.

Birds of prey

The only notable birds of prey reported in August were a Honey Buzzard over Selsdon Wood on the 15th, a Goshawk over Alexandra Park/Hornsey High Street on the 24th and Ospreys over three London sites at the end of the month.

Passerines and a near-passerine

Flycatcher sightings during August included half a dozen Pied Flycatcher as well as numerous Spotted Flycatcher. One Pied Fly lingered in Regent's Park for five days. Half a dozen Tree Pipit were also reported, along with many Whinchat, Wheatear and Common Redstart. Among numerous sightings of Yellow Wagtail was one bird of the continental Blue-headed Wagtail subspecies, seen at KGV on the 18th.

Wood Warblers were seen at Brentwood on the 25th and Mudchute on the 26th, and a Marsh Warbler was reported at Staines Moor on the 27th.

On the 18th a Hoopoe (the "near-passerine" of the above subheading) was found at Aldborough Hatch. It was London’s first Upupa epops (don't you love that name?) since 2nd May.
