A quiet end to the yearEdit

December is typically not a great month for finding rare birds in the London area and this year has been no exception. If you were hoping that December 2018 would produce something to match the trio of Parrot Crossbill 12 months previously, you will have been disappointed. Admittedly there was a bit of a stir when a Rose-coloured Starling was reported in Ealing on Christmas Day, but the bird was later dismissed as a partially leucistic Common Starling.

Cattle Egret 3

If I were to pick a Bird of the Month for December it would probably have to be Cattle Egret, even though this is now the fourth consecutive month in which the species has been recorded (after not being seen at all in the first eight months of the year). December’s bird was found at Brent Reservoir on the 23rd, just three months after the site’s first ever record. Unfortunately, like its September predecessor, the latest bird showed itself to just two birders before decamping.

Although no longer as rare as Rosy Starling, Cattle Egret is still a highly desirable species in the London area, as is evidenced by the number of birders who trekked off to RSPB Rainham Marshes in October to twitch a bird that settled in there for a while.

It is only a quarter of a century since Cattle Egret was first seen in the London recording area — a splendid octet found in the Colne Valley in May 1992 (during an influx into northern Europe probably due mainly to drought in Spain). Sightings then occurred only sporadically through the nineties and the noughties, but in the past few years the species has been reported increasingly frequently.

On the subject of rare herons, it may be of interest that December produced only two reports of Great (White) Egret, compared with 27 records from a dozen sites in November (including 11 sightings of a long-staying bird in Richmond Park). But I only mention this as an excuse to use a G(W)E image that someone has added to this wiki — even though the posting fails to indicate the date or the site or even the photographer’s real name. (I have never understood why some contributors feel the need to hide behind pseudonyms.)

Worthy waterbirdsEdit

Few anatids of particular interest were seen during December, the best being a drake Red-breasted Merganser recorded at Denham Country Park’s Quarry Lake on various dates from the 13th to the end of the month, usually associating with a few Goosander (up to 10 birds). Goosander were also seen at eight other sites and Goldeneye at five sites. Few Smew were reported, and at least one of these birds was of dubious origin.

A drake Scaup at Walthamstow Reservoirs was believed to be the same bird returning for a fifth year. The only other Scaup sightings were at KGV Reservoir, with up to three birds on various dates.

No wild swans were reported, and the only wild geese (I exclude Greylag, Canada and Egyptian from this description) were a Barnacle Goose at Rainham Marshes on the 1st and 10th, a Pink-footed Goose at Crayford Marshes/Dartford Marshes on the 22nd and one of each (the same birds?) at Dartford Marshes on the 24th. These birds are of unknown origin — though not as obviously plastic as a Bar-headed Goose found at London Wetland Centre on the 29th.

As for non-anatid waterbirds, the few noteworthy records were almost all from Staines Reservoir — a Great Northern Diver ( 22nd, 28th, 29th), three Black-necked Grebe (28th, 29th) and a Slavonian Grebe (29th). A Slav was also seen at King George V Reservoir (16th).

Some scolopaceous wadersEdit

Throughout December, birders in the main hide at Brent Reservoir had regular views of one or two Jack Snipe, with others seen occasionally at Greenwich Ecology Park and London Wetland Centre. Woodcock were reported from various sites up to the 11th, but then for some reason were not seen again until after Christmas. As for other waders, I can’t see anything really worth drawing attention to.

An assortment of owlsEdit

Two Short-eared Owl seen regularly at Rainham Marshes during November seem to have moved on, because the last sighting was a single bird on 1st Dec. But one SEO was at Swanscombe Marsh on the 7th, after which there were several sightings in the Colne Valley, including three birds hunting over rough ground at Bayhurst Wood on the 30st (and into 2019). Little Owl were reported at five sites, with up to three birds each at Totteridge Valley and Wanstead Flats. Tawny Owl were recorded at 10 sites and Barn Owl at four.

In a total of more than 30 owl reports, almost all were north of the Thames: the only three transpontine records were the SEO at Swanscombe and Little Owl at London Wetland Centre and Richmond Park.

Two passable passerinesEdit

December’s only passerines of passing interest were warblers. The Siberian Chiffchaff found at Sevenoaks Wildlife Reserve late in November was recorded for the last time on 1st Dec. Another unusual bird for December was a lingering Reed Warbler found at Walthamstow Wetlands on the 10th and still present the next day. This was only the second Reed Warbler known to have hung around into December, after one in 2014 that bizarrely loitered around a traffic island in Leyton until the 28th. The previous latest ever sighting was 24th Nov (2003).
