Highlights of the monthEdit

The headline bird for the last two months just made it into February when one of London’s first two Buff-bellied Pipit reappeared at Horton Gravel Pits on the 2nd. Sadly, there were no further sightings. Other good birds included a Penduline Tit at Rainham Marshes on the 17th and a female Ferruginous Duck flushed from Danson Park lake on the 1st — presumably the same Fudge Duck that has visited south-east London in the past two winters. A Great Northern Diver was at Staines Reservoir for almost the whole month — joined for one day by a Red-throated Diver. Slavonian Grebe were seen at three London sites. Wintering ducks included two Long-tailed Duck — one at Queen Mother Reservoir and one in the Lee Valley. But sawbills were in short supply, with only eight sightings of Smew (compared with about 50 in February 2012) and 26 of Goosander (compared with 60 a year ago). And the only reported merganser was the dodgy Hooded Merganser that keeps returning to Connaught Water. Reports of Scaup were also down, with only two encountered, both at Staines Reservoir. Two Great White Egret flew over Rainham Marshes on the 6th and another flew over Rickmansworth on the 19th. The London Wetland Centre hosted four Bittern, with singles seen at a few other sites. On the last weekend of the month Rainham Marshes was the place for raptors, with a male Hen Harrier, three Marsh Harrier, two Short-eared Owl and two Barn Owl. Hyde Park’s two female Bearded Tit stayed until the 17th, when they relocated to Regent's Park for a couple of days. They then turned up briefly at Amwell GP on the 20th before returning to Rye Meads, where they had been ringed last November. Brent Reservoir’s male Beardie was last heard on the 9th, and one was at Rainham Marshes on the same day; two males were at the London Wetland Centre on the 17th. Waxwing continued to be seen all over London. The largest flock was 142 at Oakwood. The small but reliable group at South Ealing Station remained until the middle of the month and then moved a short way south.
