Highlights of the MonthEdit

No spectacular birds were reported on this wiki during February 2016 (although it turned out later that London’s first Oriental Turtle Dove had been found in a private garden in Otford, Kent, on February 15th, after which it apparently went to ground before reappearing in the same place in April).

Perhaps February’s best twitchable bird was Bury Farm’s Great Grey Shrike, which had been around for two weeks in January, had shown itself again on February 9th and 10th and then reappeared after another fortnight, on the 25th.

Although February had no larids to rival the January 31st Franklin’s Gull (only the second for London), once again there were other rare-ish gulls around. A Glaucous Gull was at Dartford Marshes on the 18th, and Iceland Gull were reported from four locations. There were a dozen records of Caspian Gull, of various ages, all near the Thames or in the Lea Valley. Four sightings of Mediterranean Gull included one in full summer plumage at Purfleet on the 27th. Adult Yellow-legged Gull appeared at Brent Reservoir, Beddington Farm Pools and Crayford Marshes, and a Kittiwake flew down the Thames on the 28th. A Fulmar (OK, so it’s not a larid but it resembles one) was seen drifting up the Thames on the 13th.

Bittern — up to three — were seen at London Wetland Centre on 15 different days, but the month produced only two other reports of this species, both from the Lea Valley. Jack Snipe turned up at five London sites. Other notable waders included the Spotted Redshank that regularly winters around Crayford Marshes and a Grey Plover that spent four days at Purfleet.

As for passerines, wintering Firecrest were reported from 18 sites. Most reliably viewable was a male bird in Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park that showed itself on 14 dates during the month. Petts Wood had no fewer than four Firecrest on the 10th, and sites at which two birds were seen included Barnes Common, Grovelands Park, Leyton Flats, Oxleas Wood and Trent Park. A Black Redstart that first appeared in Erith on 25 November 2015 continued to show itself regularly during February. A Dartford Warbler spent a few days in Richmond Park, a Brambling was at Walthamstow Marshes for a couple of weeks, and three Marsh Tit were seen in Northaw Great Wood on the 11th.
