Highlights of the month

August was a month of two halves, with little of interest in the first half but plenty in the second. Perhaps the most exciting news early in the month was the disclosure that two pairs of Marsh Warbler had spent the summer at Rainham Marshes.

On the 24th a Great Skua visited a couple of West London reservoirs before disappearing over Windsor Great Park, and the next day an Arctic Skua and a Gannet passed Rainham Marshes.

Quail was found at Wanstead Flats on the 24th and a Spotted Crake at Dagenham Chase on the 31st.

Garganey were reported from eight sites in the latter half of the month; a juvenile stayed at the London Wetland Centre from the 22nd to the 31st and one that arrived at Brent Reservoir on 26th was joined by another on the 27th, a third on the 29th and a fourth on the 31st. Rotherhithe’s long-staying Long-tailed Duck was last seen on the 22nd.

Southbound raptors included one Osprey, two Honey Buzzard and three Goshawk.

Plenty of waders were on the move, the rarest being a Red-necked Phalarope at King George V Reservoir from the 23rd to the 25th. A twitchable Wood Sandpiper was at Rainham Marshes from the 16th to the 24th, when it was joined by another.

At least three Sabine’s Gull were in Aveley Bay on the 25th. On the 24th, a Roseate Tern was heard passing downriver at Crossness and then seen at Rainham.

On the 25th, the month’s only reported Turtle Dove passed over Brent Reservoir (which also had the only record in August 2012). Four Wryneck turned up at the end of the month, with two at King George V Reservoir on the 28th, one at Cudham, Kent, on the 29th and one at Alexander Park on the 30th and 31st.

Whinchat, Wheatear, Common Redstart and Spotted Flycatcher were seen in increasing numbers through the month, joined by Yellow Wagtail from the 11th, Tree Pipit from the 16th and Pied Flycatcher from the 20th. A possible Greenish Warbler was reported in Barnet on the 12th and BirdGuides reported one singing in Woodford Green on the 26th, but neither record could be confirmed. Wood Warblers were seen at Brent Reservoir, Hampstead Heath and Regent's Park.

Finally, a Red-legged Partridge spent two days on the small balcony of a flat in Homerton before being caught and released on Hackney Marshes.

"Arkley Wilderness" is an amazingly vast tract of wild open country covered in wildflowers (mainly Fleabane?) which lies at the southwestern end of a public footpath which starts across the road (Rowley Lane) from the Arkley water tower and lies behind another area known formerly as Barnet Gate Open Space, which is accessible via the track (Brickfield Lane) opposite the "Gate" pub. • Ewell Village (Bourne Hall): 16 Black-headed Gull, 36 Canada Geese incl two ringed birds originally from Richmond Park, 4 Tufted Duck incl f & three yg, 1 Grey Heron (Neil Batten)
• Galley Hill Wood EN9: Honey Buzzard at 12.05, mobbed at one point by one of two Common Buzzard, so very good comparison of the two species possible. Watched for a couple of minutes, then the bird gained height and headed E. Viewed from the cycle path halfway up the east side of Holyfield Hall Farm (Martin Shepherd)
