Bird of the Month: a Pec Sand at RainhamEdit

My nomination for Bird of the Month for July 2017 is the Pectoral Sandpiper that spent a couple of days at Rainham Marshes at the end of July.

London’s first recorded Pec Sand was one shot at Brent Reservoir in 1846, although this bird only came to light when its mortal remains were sold as part of a collection 45 years later. The next London sighting was not until 1950, but since then this scarce passage migrant from North America or Siberia has been recorded increasingly frequently in Britain. It has even bred successfully in Scotland.

Pec Sand is now a near-annual vagrant in London, usually turning up in late July or August. The most recent previous visitors were one-day birds at King George V Reservoir in August 2016 and Beddington Farmlands in August 2015. The most twitchable was one that spent nine days at Rainham Marshes in July 2013.

Other notable waders this month include a number of Wood Sandpiper, with individuals at Rainham Marshes (4–5 Jul, 19–23 Jul), William Girling Reservoir (25–30 Jul), Lower Chingford (29–31 Jul), King George V Reservoir (29 Jul) and Fairlop Waters (30 Jul). Rainham also featured two male Ruff on the 19th. An adult Bar-tailed Godwit in breeding plumage was at Grays on the 8th, and on the 31st a flock of 16 Whimbrel was seen over Amwell GP.

Other water-loving birds Edit

Two Roseate Tern graced Staines Reservoir for several hours on the 1st, and no fewer than eight Common Scoter were at Hilfield Park Reservoir on the 3rd, with smaller numbers at various other London sites during the month. A Manx Shearwater was at King George V Reservoir on 21st and 22nd July.

A Cattle Egret over Ingrebourne Valley on 22nd was described by Rare Bird Alert as a “tremendous” London sighting. A Great White Egret reported by a non-birder at Totteridge on the 14th was confirmed by photographic evidence, and two birds were at Rainham Marshes the following day. An unseasonal Bittern turned up at Osterley Park on the 16th.

Raptors Edit

Goshawk were seen over Woodford Green on the 10th and Putney on the 30th, but the month’s finest raptor was a Honey Buzzard photographed by Magnus Andersson circling above The Regent’s Park on the 19th. (In case you are confused by that sentence, it was the hunnybuz that was circling over the park, not Magnus.)

Near-passerines Edit

Had they been considerate enough to hang around for a while, the two European Bee-eater seen over Bexleyheath on the 7th might have been contenders for Bird of the Month. Other interesting near-passerines included a juvenile Nightjar flushed by deer from Bushy Park bracken on the 24th and a female Cuckoo mobbed by terns at King George V Reservoir on the 10th.

Passerines Edit

Records of breeding by Bearded Tit in London have been sparse in recent years, but on 7th July a juvenile was seen in a small reedbed in Rainham village, and on the next day two family parties were recorded at Rainham Marshes. The only other passerines of note during the month were a few early returning migrants such as Spotted Flycatcher, Whinchat and Redstart.
