  • Blackheath: The Dips - family of 5 Chiffchaffs included at least 3 fledged young plus 1 adult. Also 2 Grey Wagtails again in Blackheath Village. (Joe Beale and Yu-Hsuan Lin).

  • High Holborn WC1V 7BH - Grey Wagtail, adult & juvenile, quickly overhead along the street, disappeared onto tops of buildings. (Marcus Hunt)
  • Mill Lane NW6 - Blackcap with 'Leiern' song along railway sidings - been there a few weeks now. (Marcus Hunt)

  • Mile End Park E3 : Reed warbler singing in reedbeds adjacent to Ecology Centre, joined by a Whitethroat (DWH)
  • Pinner Park Farm: 1 Little Owl, 7 House Martin, 17 Swallow, 10 Swift, 10 Goldfinch, Green Woodpecker, 1 Coal Tit, 1 Jay, 6 Canada Goose goslings (now almost fully grown) & 1 Grey Heron (Jon Ridge)

  • Bromley-by-Bow: 3 Siskin over 05:30 (who knows where they came from?), Peregrine SE lunchtime, Linnet, 38 Coot, 12+ Sand Martin, 3 Black headed Gulls over, pr Tufted Duck, 3 male Blackcap in close proximity, Whitethroat, pr Mute Swan still with 4 chicks (aaaaahhh) (S Fisher)
  • Hemans Estate Community Garden/Stockwell: 7am - pr of Hedge Sparrows just started singing and displaying in the last week, not evident all year(Michael Mac)

  • Pinner (The Croft): Sparrowhawk over (JR).
  • Pinner Park Farm: 1 Little Owl in the usual tree, Whitethroat, Goldfinch, 5 Swallow, 7 Swift & 10 Black-headed Gull (Jon Ridge).
  • Rainham Marshes: 1 Grasshopper Warbler showing superbly on and off by river wall, Hobby, Sparrowhawk, c6 Little Egret (Oliver Simms).
  • Richmond Park: 3 f mandarin, several Swifts, RN Parakeet, Egyptian Geese with 2 goslings. (Penelope Paxer)
  • Staines Reservoir: Pair of Black-necked Grebes close to the causeway and the South Basin tower until at least 08:50. Also 5 Shovelers, 2 Hobbies flew past the causeway and over KGVI Res. together at approx. 08:40 and at least 7 Common Terns on the closest raft on North Basin among many Black-headed Gulls. A Fox was sleeping on South Basin bank at approx. 08:30 (PFM).
  • Tyttenhanger GPs: Wood Warbler, Little Egret, Kestrel, 8+ Common terns, 12 GC Grebes, 3 Oystercatcher, 4 Lapwing, Pheasant (William G)
  • Waterlow Park: 08.00. Reed Warbler again on Lower Pond. Whitethroat singing in Cemetery, 12 Tufted Duck, Blackcap singing. (P.Angus)

  • Alexandra Park: (pre 9 am visit) Crazy mixed-up Willow Warbler still present around racetrack area, plus Reed Warbler singing from stand-alone ivy bush in middle of car park on Newland Road, by park's nursery entrance! (David Callahan)
  • Beddington: 10 Black-tailed Godwit, 12 Green Sandpiper some pics here (Peter Alfrey)
  • Bushy Park: 2 Shelduck flying round, Ring-necked Parakeets, Swift, several Skylark and heard Reed Bunting. No sign of Sparrowhawk - only a feather! (Penelope Paxer)

Sunday 26th June 2011Edit

  • Alexandra Park: Mixed singing Willow Warbler showing well in Cricket Scrub; abraded looking plumage but bright orange legs and yeloow wash to throat/upper breast testify to Willow. Also 4 Ringlets (2 Cricket Scrub, 2 Lower Slopes may be indicative of a small coloy - previously just a few sightings historically), 2 Common Tern, Lesser Whitethroat singing Cricket Scrub (Bob Watts, Andrew Gardener).
  • Blackheath: The "Dips" - in the evening, at least 4 Song Thrushes included 3 singing males all within about 50 metres! Also 5 small bats in the nearby area (Pipistrelle types).   • Rainham Marshes RSPB: 2 Curlew, 2 Little Egret, 2 Cuckoo, Grasshopper Warbler, Rook, 4 Cetti's Warbler, Peregrine.(Paul Hawkins)
  • Ruislip Woods/Lido: 78 Mute Swan, pr Egyptian geese (my first here), 4 Great-crested Grebes (1 on nest), 2 Cormorant, Heron, pr Common Tern on raft, Hobby, Kestrel, c30 Swifts, Grey Wagtail, family Pied Wagtails, c15 House Martins (breeding in Reservoir Rd), family Garden Warblers, 15 sp butterfly including c20 Marbled Whites, 8 White Admiral + 2 male Purple Emperors; another observer claimed a Silver-washed Fritillary (Neil Anderson/Kathryn Bull)

  • Hampstead Heath: Red Kite (patch tick) over Vale of Health at 0930, mobbed by crow and Herring Gull. Dabchicks at Kenwood still sitting on eggs despite concert stage etc very close (Sash Tusa) Kingfishers on Wood pond and Stock pond (C Bird)
  • Pinner Park Farm: 1 Little Owl in the usual tree, 21 Swallow, 13 Swift, 3 Whitethroat, Green & Great Spotted Woodpecker, 5 Stock Dove, 1 Jay & 5 Grey Heron (Jon Ridge).
  • Rainham Marshes: Curlew (Aveley Bay), 3 Yellow-legged Gulls, 10+ Lapwing, 2 Cetti's Warblers (David Callahan).
  • Regent's Park: 2 Little Grebe, 4(2 ads., 2 juvs) Great Crested Grebe, 1 female Pochard with 4 ducklings,1 Sparrowhawk, 2 Kestrel, 2 ad Common Tern, 5 Stock Dove, 6+ Swift, 4 House Martin, 18:50 hrs, 2 Reed Warbler, feeding young (Robert Callf).

Friday 24th June 2011Edit

  • Alexandra Park: Mixed singer Willow Warbler doing far more Chiff than Willow (must be the local influence as there are no Willows breeding on site) (Bob Watts); it's getting desperate now! (DC). Hobby over office at 09.50 scaring the hell out of the few swifts left (David Callahan). Could the wonky warbler be a hybrid? (name?) - bird shows no features of Chiffie other than its song (and bear in mind that much song is learned not genetic), so it seems unlikely (DC).
  • Barnehurst/Bexleyheath: 1 Goldfinch, Lyndhurst Rd (infrequent in these parts). Martens Grove - 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, Chiffchaff. Shenstone Park - 7 Ring-necked Parakeet on the ground feeding on Hordeum murinum seed heads. Danson Park - 7 Egyptian Geese, all well-grown (up from the usual 2 ...), at least 38 Canada Geese, 1 Mistle Thrush. (Chris Rose).
  • Blackheath: "The Dips": Whitethroat, Chiffchaff, Song Thrush, Dunnock, Wren all singing and a local rarity, a Small Tortoiseshell (Joe Beale).
  • Blackheath Village: 2 Grey Wagtails, early evening, feeding on rooftops behind Costcutter/Blackheath concert Halls. 1 was an adult male, the other a female/imm type but I lacked optics to check. They may perhaps have bred again locally this year (Joe Beale)
  • Chipping Ongar: 2 Little Egrets, Spotted Flycatcher, Turtle Dove, 10 Yellowhammers, 2 Reed Buntings, Bullfinch, Treecreeper (I Woodward).
  • Greenwich Peninsula Ecology Park: 1 pair of Little Grebe with 3 chicks & 1 pair of Common Tern with 2 chicks + several pairs of Reed Warbler. (Conrad Ellam).
  • Hampstead Heath: 1 Hobby near Red Arches, 1 Common Tern at several ponds, Sparrowhawk, Hamstead 1 Pond: Great Crested Grebe on 2nd clutch, 2 from first clutch, 3 Mute Swan broods, 2 Green Woodpeckers. Kenwood Ponds - 2 pair Little Grebe (first year here in years) I am wondering if these have come from St James's Park as not seen this species there on 2 visits in last 2 months. On 1,000 Pound Pond Canada Geese with 2 young first time in many years at Kenwood or Heath, pr Egyptian Geese and 4 young, female Mandarin and 1 duckling, Swifts (Michael Mac).
  • London WC2: Black Redstart song over the din of Covent Garden 15:20 (Ian Cater)
  • Pinner Park Farm: Sparrowhawk being mobbed by a flock of hirundines comprising of: 23 Swallow (the highest ever count in June at this site), 1 Sand Martin (failed breeder?) & 1 House Martin. Also: 17 Swift, 3 Whitethroat, 9 Mistle Thrush, 9 Stock Dove, Green & Great Spotted Woodpecker, first juvenile Goldfinch noted & 1 Grey Heron (Jon Ridge).
  • Rainham Marshes RSPB: immature male Marsh Harrier flew over; 23 Crossbills flew south over the visitor centre at 11:45 (BirdGuides).
  • Regent's Park: Hobby 8.45am, 2 prs Kestrel 4 & 3 young, pr Little Owl + 3 owlets, pr Common Terns, 2 prs Reed Warblers with young, C Whitethroat m (Tony Duckett).
  • South Norwood Lake: pair Mute Swan, pair Great Crested Grebe (with 2 juv), c20 Tufted Duck, 2 Cormorant, 1 Grey Wagtail, 1m Sparrowhawk, c20 Common Swift, 2 House Martin, 2 Nuthatch, 4 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 8 Blackcap, 5 Chiffchaff, 3 House Sparrow, Chaffinch, Goldfinch, Greenfinch (John Watson & Gavin Hawgood).
  • Totteridge Valley: 2 singing Lesser Whitethroats, 1 singing Garden Warbler, 1 Kestrel plus usuals; also at least 7 Ringlets (John Colmans).
  • Vauxhall Bus Terminal: at 8am not even looking for them - heard Peregrine and saw 3 young - 2 chasing one carrying a pigeon at double decker bus height down main route of buses (Michael Mac).
  • Wanstead Flats: 2 Lesser Whitethroat singing, Garden Warbler, Blackcap doing strange flourish at the end of song, 2 Willow Warbler carrying food (a good sign), Chiffchaff, C Whitethroat, 20 + Greenfinch (including young), 2 Reed Bunting, 30 + Jackdaw (with young), 1 juv Blackbird (very few around), Mistle Thrush (no sign of young here), Song Thrush, 5 Black-headed Gull (north), 3 Tufted Duck, G Heron (Nick Croft)
  • Wanstead Park: Common Tern (west over Heronry - first this year), Lesser Whitethroat (old sewage works), Reed Warbler singing again, 3 Little Egret, 5 Grey Heron (2 2nd year birds), 11 Mistle Thrush (so presumably some managed a brood), Kestrel (female), 3 Great Crested Grebe, 4 Little Grebe, Kingfisher, 5 House Martin, 30+ Swift (Nick Croft)

  • Alexandra Park: As yesterday, but without the Stock Doves (David Callahan).
  • Barnehurst: circa 15 Swifts over west end of Golf Course a.m. and late evening (ranging as far as Barnehurst Rd.). Golf Course: 1 adult female Blackcap and juvenile. Male Whitethroat display flying. Chiffchaff. Long-tailed Tit. 1 Wren in open and another singing. Song Thrush heard in evening. c44 Starlings over Northall Rd. (Chris Rose).
  • Bromley-by-Bow: 2 Shelduck at 3 Mills lock early am, 2 Common Tern hunting, Lesser Whitethroat, 6 singing Blackcap, 2 Reed Warbler (one carrying food), Whitethroat, 2 pairs of Mute Swan (the fertile pair with 4 chicks at last, the other pair... well they keep trying), 2 Swift over, 10+ Sand Martin, Mistle Thrush with another nest, Stock Dove, Sparrowhawk over station, G S Woodpecker (Stuart Fisher)

River Cray Footpath 106 - male Blackcap and probable second signing nearby, 2 Collared Dove. River Cray By-way 105 - Reed Warblers, 1 Swift, 1 House Martin, 1 Wren, 1 Whitethroat, Chiffchaff, 2 Long-tailed Tit, 2 Mute Swan. Thames Road Wetland - 6 Swift, 2 Grey Heron, Reed Warblers, 2 Moorhen, 1 adult Coot with juvenile, 1 adult Little Grebe. 1 Greenfinch on TV aerial Crayford High St. (Chris Rose).
  • Fulham Reach (Thames): Common Sandpiper (flying very low over river and calling at high tide) (M Ruscoe)
  • Hemans Estate Community Garden - Stockwell: Reed Warbler singing in Ivy at 7am, but not seen - amazed...[out video clip here] (Michael Mac).
  • Staines Reservoir: Post-3rd winter Caspian Gull on KGVI gantry accompanied by a probable Caspian Gull (somewhat younger looking) briefly at 08:05 (PFM on behalf of BW).
  • Vauxhall: a Peregrine family picnic on Feral Pigeon at 6:20am (Michael Mac).

  • Alexandra Park: Mixed singing Willow Warbler still in cricket scrub, plus Dunnock incorporating several other species into its song on the opposite side of the pitch! Also, Common Tern, pair Stock Doves, 5+ Swifts, 2 House Martins, family of Great Crested Grebes (5 chicks), Singing Blackcaps, Chifcchaffs, Whitethroats, juvenile Great Spotted Woodpecker (David Callahan).

Raptor low over south end of Bexley Rd. chasing smaller bird, then re-appeared without prey and flew down road between shops at two-storey roof height. Possibly Sparrowhawk.   • London EC4/EC1: Heard Black Redstart singing high up [out of sight on a roof], on the boundrary of EC4 and EC1. Not sure, given the vagueness of previous reports, whether this was one of the previously reported birds or not. At one point I saw a BR sized bird shoot between two buildings, directly above me, but light was bad and the view momentary. Saw [and heard] much, much better Black Redstarts at Dungeness the next day! (Alan Hobson).

  • Brent Reservoir: Common Buzzard flew low northwest at 09.42 (Andrew Self), 1 Little Egret, 1 Green Sandpiper, 4 Lapwings, 1 Little Ringed Plover, plus first White-letter Hairstreak of the year (Roy Beddard, John Gravatt.
  • Crossness: Greenshank and 2 Ringed Plovers in Barking Bay, 3 Teal, 8 Lapwings including one on nest (first confirmed breeding attempt for several years), 5 Oystercatchers, 16 Gadwall (John Archer).
  • East India Dock Basin NR: 1 1st sum Mediterranean Gull upriver 14.00, 1 Swift, 2 Oystercatchers. (Gary A James).
  • Hatch End Playing Fields: singing Whitethroat along the River Pinn, 1 Cormorant over east, 1 Green Woodpecker, 22 Swift, 2 Jackdaw over & 1 Fox by the railway track (JR).
  • Hemans Estate Community Garden: see Peregrine on building at Vauxhall, also last week I reckon the cat has eaten Magpie chicks when they came out - the adults have gone - if they have young that fledge, they usually can be heard in the area for a few weeks with the adults there is now silence and there were feathers all over the pavement, must have only been 1 or 2 chicks that left the nest (Michael Mac).
  • Isle of Dogs: Cuckoo singing at Millwall Park 7am (Sean Huggins)
  • London Wetlands Centre: Hobby, Reed Warbler, 2 Redshank, 4 Shoveler, Pochard, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Common Tern (A. Luscombe)

  • Margravine Cemetery: 1 young Ring Necked Parakeet at nest + adult (first time breeding here), 1 young Great Spotted Woodpecker, up to 5 Swift around hospital (Nathalie Mahieu).
  • Northaw Great Wood: 6 (including four recently fledged juveniles) Great Spotted Woodpecker; 1 singing male Garden Warbler; 1 Willow Warbler; 1 singing male Goldcrest; 4(2 adults, 2 juveniles) Nuthatch; 6 Treecreeper, including at least two juveniles (Robert Callf).
  • New River Path, Winchmore Hill: Pair of Pochards between Farm Road and Firs Lane - I've never seen them here before. Patch tick. (Katy M.)
  • Pinner Park Farm: 1 Little Owl - appeared to be carrying food, 1 Grey Wagtail along the River Pinn (first for some weeks), Whitethroat, 15 Swift, 2 Swallow, 4 Coot chicks after five weeks & 1 Grey Heron which was ferociously seen off by one of the adult Coots after it dropped in for a snack (Jon Ridge).
  • Putney: 2 Little egrets flying west at 6.30am (Ian Strickland).
  • South Norwood CP: 4 Common Tern (1 fishing successfully and then preening on the island; 3 others over in a south easterly direction) and 2 House Martin (Steven Robinson).

  • Regent's Park: Little Owl at least 2 chicks, Kestrel 3 chicks plus Hummingbird Hawkmoth (Tony Duckett).
  • Shirley Park GC: 2 pairs of Moorhen have fledged 7 young so far, 2 pairs of Swallow entering a building near Oak's Farm (Croydon Birders).
  • Wandsworth (King George's Park): Common Buzzard over drifting West (MRH).
  • Wormwood Scrubs: 1 quietly singing Reed Warbler (unusual here), 5 Jackdaw, c3 Stock Dove, usual summer migrants plus belated report of a Common Buzzard on 31st May (The Scrubbers).

  • Fleet Street: apparent albinistic Herring Gull perched briefly on roof of Goldman Sachs building at 13.40. Very pale (almost all white) bird showing virtually no black in wing tips or at least a dull pale grey colour rather than black. Size correct for Herring - I am ruling out other 'white' gulls due to season. Could this be the infamous ringed bird SH1T which appears at various other London sites? (Neil Batten).

  • London EC1: 2 Black Redstarts feeding in my office courtyard all afternoon. Couldn't see well enough to tell sex but not necessarily a pair - some fairly aggressive chasing going on. (Tom Smith)
  • London Wetland Centre: 4 Mute Swan cygnets, male Shoveler, Sparrowhawk, Great Crested Grebe chick, Little Ringed Plover, Redshank, 12 Common Tern and 3 chicks (LWC website).

  • Moorgate: male Peregrine perched on red crane, remaining there for a minute or two even when the crane was moving (David Callahan).
  • Paddington Green: male Peregrine Falcon feeding from 18:30, joined by female from 19:15 (D. McKenzie).
  • Rickmansworth: Osprey west over Waitrose car park 18:45 (Birdguides) also seen flying due north low over my garden in Highfield Way, Rickmansworth at 18.49 (Andrew Moon).
  • Wanstead Flats: pr Gadwall, 1m Pochard, pr Tufted Duck, another batch of 6 Greylag goslings, 25 + Swift (over Alex) plus 10+ over cemetry to the south, 4 House Martin, 1 Swallow (north), Lesser Whitethroat (scrub east of Alex), Willow Warbler (SSSI), plenty of young Common Whitethroat, 3 Little Grebe, 2 Stock Dove, Heron and 2 large Terrapin on Alex island (first I've seen here) (Nick Croft).
  • Wanstead Park: pr Gadwall, 2 pr Tufted Duck, Egyptian Goose, 2 Aylesbury ducklings dumped by somebody (caught and boxed up for the park keepers), 5 Great Crested Grebe, 5 Little Grebe (still only 1 visible chick), Little Egret, Kingfisher, Swift, Swallow (north), 2 House Martin, Sparrowhawk, Reed Warbler. Met a fellow birder who had come looking for Garganey - apparently recorded as being present in last month's Birdwatching magazine, off to check (Nick Croft).
  • South Norwood Lake: pair Mute Swan, pair Great Crested Grebe (with 2 young) 1 Cormorant, 12 Tufted Duck, c12 Ring-neckeed Parakeet, 2 Song Thrush, 1 Common Whitethroat, 1 Willow Warbler, c6 Blackcap, 5 Chiffchaff, c20 Long-tailed Tit, c12 Common Swift, 1 Green Woodpecker, 2 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 1 Nuthatch, Goldfinch, Greenfinch, Chaffinch, c6 House Sparrow (John Watson & Gavin Hawgood).
