By posting news here you agree that your reports may be added to the LNHS database for use in the London Bird Report. A scalable map of the London recording area can be found here.

Please list sightings alphabetically by site, following our standard format to assist automatic compilation of records into the database. Only report sightings of wide interest rather than listing all common birds (sightings of a more general nature may be recorded on the General sightings page). DO NOT post details of nesting by scarce breeding birds (those included in Schedule 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, as amended). Any such reports will be removed; please submit them instead to the appropriate LNHS bird recorder.

More London bird news can be found on Twitter by searching for sightings from many different observers using the #londonbirds hashtag or by visiting the London Bird Club page (no Twitter account is necessary for either).

A while back I saw a medieval, C15 illuminated MS in the British Library, showing birds of northern France and England. Among them was a RNP. They were presumably pets (although it is interesting that all the other birds shown were wild species), but it shows that, in some capacity at least, they have been around in Western Europe for centuries [Alan Hobson] They've been in Britain since the Romans arrived. A 1st century AD wall painting showing them was recently discovered in London. [Ralph Hancock]

Friday 13th January 2017Edit

  • Barnes, Barn Elms Playing Fields: I am regularly seeing a handful of Canada Geese that are not typical birds. Slightly smaller, smaller billed, squarer headed, chin strap buff and narrowing towards the top and with a black line through the white throat. Slightly darker mantle, flanks and breast. There are also birds with intermediate features. They do not really fit one of the obvious races. Is there a small cryptic population of another Canada race in London? Do others see similar birds? (R.Kaye) - Interesting observations - I have come across several smaller birds with variable plumages, but simply dismissed them as first-winters. thanks Rupert (JR) If you could get some pictures then there maybe people on here who could tell you if they are one of the many subspecies of Canada's. (SL) A study in Canada Geese wasn't exactly a career choice, but I'll see what I can do : ) (JR). Are these perhaps Canada/Greylag hybrids? These are present on nearby Barnes Pond and may well flight out from there with the Canadas. Any Canadas in this area will mostly be BTO ringed on the left leg, hybrids are not ringed. Hope this helps. (P J Belman).
