Highlights of the monthEdit

There were no outstanding accidentals in the London area in March, so perhaps the bird of the month was the Hawfinch. For most of March, anyone who paid a morning visit to Juniper Bottom in Mickleham, Surrey, had the chance of seeing a large flock of these shy and wary birds. Numbers were at times as high as 110 — apparently the first three-figure flock in the London Recording Area since 28th February 1942, when 200 were seen in Epping Forest. Notable London sightings included three Great White Egret and one Spoonbill, plus a Stone Curlew that spent a few hours at Wanstead Flats on the 24th. Other waders were also on the move, with Avocet, Curlew and Oystercatcher dropping in unexpectedly at various sites. The wintering Spotted Redshank at Crayford Marshes stayed put until the 21st. Other lingering winter visitors included Great Northern DiverBlack-throated Diver and Red-throated Diver at reservoirs in the Staines area, along with Slavonian GrebeBlack-necked GrebeScaupCommon ScoterSmew and Long-tailed Duck. And the Lee Valley’s Long-tailed DuckSlavonian Grebe and Black-necked Grebes also seemed in no hurry to leave. On the 18th, the London Wetland Centre had a surprise visit from a Blacksmith Lapwing — presumably an escape rather than a vagrant from southern Africa. Summer visitors  were slow returning, presumably because of the continuing cold weather and easterly winds. A few Sand Martin, Little Ringed Plover and Wheatear appeared early in March, followed  later in the month by the odd Ring Ouzel and House Martin. Other notable sightings included Little Gull and Kittiwake at various London venues during the month. An early Tree Pipit visited Walthamstow Reservoirs on the 14th, and Waxwing continued to be seen all over London, but generally in smaller flocks than in February.

White Wagtail IS alba i.e Motacilla alba alba. Your entry therefore should say 'in amongst 40+ yarrellii. D Barrett. Actually they are all 'alba' wagtails, this is the general term used when it is not possible to assign them to a sub-species, it is used most frequently at Bird Obs with flyover birds. Sub-specifically you can then break them down to 'yarrelli' & 'alba' if seen well. PW  I take your point Paul, but to say White Wagtail in amongst alba in this context is misleading and clearly wrong since Jonathan obviously meant White in amongst Pied because we are talking here of races. It wasn't my intention however to open up a taxonomic discussion.  Dan

Thanks (IS);  IS - sorry if the wrong 'burb (LB Bexley is named on the 'Friends of' website, etc but Sidcup usefully aligns with the two posts below anyway, so thanks for that!) and maybe a knowledgeable Good Samaritan will add a patch description to the List - it certainly deserves to be there :) (b_e)

Thanks, that's helpul. Although overall quite a small area, the whole open area known as Tooting Commons (comprising Tooting Bec Common and Tooting Graveney Common) spans three postcodes - SW12, SW16 and SW17; so, should I add each relevant postcode to my posts? I notice hardly anyone here actually lists their postcodes. For more on Tooting Commons: (Nick Granger-Taylor). London's unique 'compass' postcodes, in particular, help orient the reader and correlate the day's sightings among unsung hotspots not on the List (and sometimes track individual flyovers like raptors, geese, waders and waxwings). Of course it's the observer's choice whether to provide one initially but with all the fortuitous advantages packed into a few keystrokes, why not? (b_e)
  • Walthamstow Marshes: Snipe, 3 Redwing, 30 Linnet (Paul Whiteman, Mike Messenger); Hi All, I have tried to create a basic page for the marshes but I can't seem to save it into the 'patch list' if someone could do this please. Also feel free to contribute as it is pretty basic and some info borrowed off the Lee Valley website (Marcus Mitchell)  Thanks for the startup page, MM :) and ditto for saving it, AS (b_e) Was there something wrong with the OS grid ref? I thought it might be useful (PW) I didn't remove it but maybe add it to the page I created (Marcus) Mea culpas to you both - while deleting from the Source tab a slew of MS Word-generated gobbledygook I inadvertently threw out the baby with the bathwater (!) so I've now duly added to MM's patch description the grid ref kindly provided by PW (b_e)

  • Mickleham: 100+ Hawfinch at Juniper Bottom late morning. Some pics here. There was no sign of any this afternoon or yesterday afternoon (following 12+ seen at 10.30am) so it seems mornings might be most reliable if you are visiting. Park at the Whitehill car park on Headley Lane at TQ 176 529 and walk SSE for c650 yards till you reach tall conifers on your right with open leaf litter bottom (shortly before pile of ash surrounded by stakes), this is TQ 180 524 - the birds spent a lot of time in these pines and also flew to feed in the yews on the other side of the path and also visited bare deciduous trees further down. Flock seemed to divide into two, with 60-70 or maybe more flying south for a time while 40 or so remained near said tall conifers, with other birds calling elsewhere. We had fifty in a tree in one scope view at one point. (David Campbell, Jamie McKenzie and Josh Burch). TQ 180 524 is 19.88 miles from St Paul's. Is this the highest-ever count in the London Area? My highest count in Dagnam Park/Duck Wood - a regular site in the 1980's and early 1990's - was 50+ on 23rd February 1986 (C. Jupp). [Update 11 Mar]: I have looked through all the Essex Avifauna's: 200 in Epping Forest on 28th Feb 1942 and flocks of 200-300 were also recorded there in the 19th century. The above appears to be the first three-figure flock in the London Recording Area outside of Epping and the last there was over 70 years ago, so an excellent record (CJ).

[it's being done for a good reason - to allow records to be exported AS]. Thanks for the info, Andrew - assuming you need CSVs, do you mind which punctuation observers use to separate their posts from one another? Use the semi-colon ; to separate posts for the same site, use the comma to separate individual species text elements, do not confuse the extractor with commas within species text elements. e.g. (1m, 2f) where the 2f gets extracted into the next species record and the 1m goes into the previous species record. Many thanks, AS - makes sense, RC? Looks like periods and excess commas are a no-no :)
