[JH] Only if they knew it was there [CE] Any chance you can let us know the group responsible - maybe some polite, informative emails might help? [JB] I believe you are correct & maybe your local/regional wildlife liason officer (police) can help to enforce law in this situation. I've challenged Woodland Trust/Natural England (as was) on this matter in the past, but on reflection should have contacted the relevant law enforcment agency. Not sure, I thought it was a group called 3 rivers clean up & tweeted them a couple of wks ago. 2 yrs ago I saw the group working & stopped them before they cleared the brambles where the tits were nesting. Last yr I missed my chance & they removed the scrub where I had seen the birds with nest material. A wk later I met the group leader & told her that they had destroyed a nest & that they shouldn't be clearing brambles in March (Conrad Ellam)

[M. Honey] - It has happened before -March 9th if I remember correctly & about ten yrs ago two Whinchats over-wintered at Taplow in Berkshire - slightly outside London recording area [JR]. Very likely to have been the Stonechat. I saw the photograph & it's a female that quite possibly be confused for a Whinchat at a distance [David Lindo] I was aware of the very early date & the possibility of confusion with Stonechat so I took the trouble to have prolonged views - it was definitely a Whinchat - nice peachy breast. white wing patches & a clear broad cream supercilium (James Palmer) Thx for details JP & congrats - not disputing but were you also able to see diagnostic white at base of tail? [b_e]. Fantastic! [David Lindo] I can't honestly say I saw the white at the base of the tail but the combination of the white wing patches which I saw very clearly plus the cream supercilium meant it had to be Whinchat - it would seem to have been a 1st winter male. It couldn't have been a male Stonechat (no resemblance whatsoever) & a female Stonechat wouldn't have shown the white on the wing. Plus the supercilum was too pronounced for female Stonechat (James Palmer).
