Highlights of the month[]

Bury Farm’s Great Grey Shrike was February’s Bird of the Month and was perhaps also the most impressive March bird, showing itself again three times. Another intriguing March bird was a Hooded Crow: some birders seem to have had doubts about a report from Blackheath on the 19th, but then this bird (or another) turned up at Wanstead Flats four days later. Other March rarities include Great White Egret, with one seen at Beddington Farmlands on the 18th and another at Rainham Marshes on the 23rd.

Summer migrants began appearing in the middle of the month. They included the year’s first Willow Warbler (14th), Sand Martin (15th), Little Ringed Plover (19th), Swallow (20th), Wheatear (23rd), Ring Ouzel (24th) and House Martin (30th). The year’s first Common Tern were seen flying upriver at Rainham on Mar 30th and a Sandwich Tern passed Gallions Reach on the following day.

What else? Well, Siberian Chiffchaff were reported from three London sites, Firecrest were seen at a couple of dozen locations and a Snow Bunting flew north over Putney on the 6th.

March sightings of anatids include a Ferruginous Duck at Staines Reservoir on the 3rd and a female Common Scoter that arrived on Southwark Park’s boating lake on the 21st and stayed into April. On the 25th, two Whooper Swans crossed over London and were seen from three different sites.

A Ring-billed Gull was at the London Wetland Centre on the 13th. Other larids recorded at various London sites included Mediterranean Gull, Iceland Gull, Caspian Gull, Yellow-legged Gull and Kittiwake.

And what about raptors? A Merlin was reported from Rainham Marshes on three occasions in early March. In the middle of the month, a birder tending his allotment garden in Finchley saw an Osprey passing over — and then another one four days later. Half a dozen more Ospreys crossed London later in the month. The 25th was a good day for Common Buzzard movement, with reports from various sites, including an astonishing 20-plus seen passing over Richmond Park. A Marsh Harrier over East India Docks on the 31st was a first for the site. And the Charing Cross Hospital Peregrines produced the year’s first egg on the 18th.
