July 31 2007

  • Whitefoot Lane, BR1: 750+ Ring-necked Parakeets in groups from S, SW and W flying towards Hither Green Cemetry roost between 19:45 and 20:30. (Dave de Silva)
  • Rainham Marshes RSPB: Spoonbill (Birdguides).
  • Waterworks N.R.(Leyton Marsh) 13:30-15:00: A large mixed Tit flock with mostly juvenile birds, very difficult to count but c30 Long-tailed Tits, a couple of Great Tits, c10 Blue Tits, 3-4 Blackcaps, c4 Whitethroats, 8-10 Lesser Whitethroats, 1 garden warbler, 3-4 Sedge Warblers and c8 Reed Warblers. Approx. 600 Black-headed Gulls (seemingly all moulting adults) catching flying ants along with a few Herring and Lesser Black-backed Gulls, c80 Swifts likewise (Paul Whiteman) ~ (Paul, Waterworks NR is some distance from Walthamstow Marshes - and the former is south of the Lea Bridge Road, the latter north. Thought I'd mention (Mark P) ... You're right it just didn't quite seem like Hackney Marsh, I forgot I actually live in Leyton!).
  • Alexandra Park: 2 Common Tern, 31 Tufted Duck (Bob Watts).
  • South Norwood Lake: 2 Mute Swans, 1 Cormorant, 1 Grey Heron, 3 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 1 Green Woodpecker, 2 Nuthatch, 3 Chiffchaff, 2 Blackcap, 2 Goldcrest, 4 Song Thrush, 2 Mistle Thrush, 4 House Sparrow, 8 Ringed-necked Parakeets, 4 Greenfinch, 10 Goldfinch, 20+ Swift, 4 House Martin (John Watson).
  • Dagenham Chase LNR: Moulting Male Common Redstart still in the Dick Marrable Bee Garden by visitor centre car park; also, 1 Greenshank, 1 Green Sandpiper on the slack (Vince Halley-Frame); 1 Kingfisher on slack at 10am, 2 Common Gull, Common Terns, BH Gulls, also 1 Sparrowhawk with passerine prey being mobbed by the rest of the flock, 2 Kestrel, 2 Green Woodpecker, many juvenile Chiffchaff, Reed Warbler (J. Lethbridge).
  • Stoke Newington Reservoirs: 3 Common Terns, 12 Gadwall, 18 Pochard (plus fully grown brood of 7 on New River), 2 Shoveler, c16 Reed Warblers, 2 Sedge Warblers, 1 Willow Warbler, 4 Grey Wagtails, 1 Swallow (Mark Pearson).
  • Walthamstow Marshes: Garden Warbler (again singing from near southern bridge), 3 Sedge Warblers, 9 Common Whitethroats, 2 Blackcaps, 12 Linnets, 35 Goldfinches, 1 Common Tern, c150 Starlings (Mark Pearson).
  • Clissold Park: 1 Common Tern, 1 Green Woodpecker, 4 Little Grebes, 1 Blackcap (Mark Pearson).
  • Ingrebourne Valley: early evening - 5 Green Sandpipers, 3 Common Sandpipers, Dunlin, 2 LRP's, Hobby, 5 Chiffchaffs, 62 Lapwing, 150 House Martins feasting on flying Ants, 2 Common Terns, Emperor Dragonfly, 3 Migrant Hawkers, 9 Common Blues, 3 Small Skippers and 2 Common Darters (Dave Morrison).

  • Alexandra Park: 2 Common Tern, Grey Wagtail, Sedge Warbler (with Long-tailed Tit flock), 2 Chiffchaff, Willow Warbler, c15 Long-tailed Tit (Des McKenzie). Little Grebe (Bob Watts).
  • Surbiton Sewage Works: Common Sandpiper on main sludge lagoon this morning [viewed from W end of eastbound platform of Berrylands Station](Bill Haines).
  • Dagenham Chase LNR: 1 Male Common Redstart in heavy moult, 1 Spotted Flycatcher, 4 Green Sandpipers, 9 Common Terns - 5 Adults - 4 Juveniles, 5 Common Whitethroats, 3 Reed Warblers, 2 Lesser Whitethroats, 1 or 2 Willow Warblers (Vince Halley-Frame).
  • Bermondsey: 11 Swifts early am, Migrant Hawker, Holly Blue and an escaped Lovebird, mostly green but blue underparts (Dave Morrison).
  • Aldenham CP: Lesser Whitethroat, 4 Chiffchaff (1 ringed), 4 Common Tern, Swift, Swallow & House Martins present in small numbers (Steve Blake).
  • Elstree Aerodrome: Bullfinch (f), 4 Swallow, 3 Swift, 2 Goldfinch, 2 Chiffchaff (Steve Blake).
  • Barnes WWT: 3 Little Grebe broods, 9 ad + 2 juv Pochard, 19 Shoveler, 2 Teal, 43 Lapwing (start of post-breeding build up in numbers), 1 Dunlin, c140 Black-headed Gulls, but still only small numbers (around 5-6) juvs, f Sparrowhawk (Matthew Palmer).

  • Brent Reservoir: Little Egret from 08.55-09.00 then flew north (Andrew Self)
  • Stoke Newington reservoirs: Green Sandpiper, Common Sandpiper (TeRNS)

  • Regents Park: 2 poss 3 Garden Warblers, Chiffchaff with recently fledged young, Nuthatch, Little Owl, Tawny Owl and Purple Hairstreak (Tony duckett).
  • Dagenham Chase LNR: 3 Green Sands, 2 Common Sands, 4 Common Terns and 1 Grey Wag ( Vince Halley-Frame ).
  • Staines Reservoir: 41 Whimbrel (in 3 loosely attached groups) flew south over the reservoir (watched from King George VI) at 16.35 hrs, at a height of approx 4-500 ft. They dropped down about 100ft over the res, but didn't change direction as they headed straight into a rain squall - which hit me a few minutes later! (Andrew Moon).
  • King George VI Res: 2 Common Sandpipers, 15+ adult Yellow-legged Gulls (Andrew Moon) earlier 2 juvenile Wheatears at KGVI, 200 Sand Martins and 250 Swifts over Staines Res and Green Sandpiper at Stanwell Moor floods (Peter Naylor).

  • Regents Park: Little Egret possibly flew from Heronry 10.32am, 1 Willow Warbler and Peregrine flew W carrying prey at 2.30pm(Tony Duckett).
  • Regent's Park: Little Egret flew northeast towards Alexandra Palace at 10:38 (Birdguides)
  • East India Dock NR: f Black Redstart, Common Whitethroat, Sand Martin, Reed Warbler (4+), Grey Heron. (Paul Hyland)
  • St Pancras Station:1 m Black Redstart (Ian Bradshaw)
