  • Danson Park: 1w Caspian Gull on lawn between the mansion and lake late morning; also 2w Mediterranean Gull before flying off west (Birdguides).
  • Russell Square Gardens (8:00-8:15am): Firecrest in centre of north side of the square still, Bedford Way area, in large tree (plane?) associating with Blue Tits; also plenty of Great Tits, Blackbirds, 1 Wren, and 3 Canada Geese flew overhead going south (J Lethbridge).

  • Walthamstow Reservoirs: (late pm) 4 Yellow-legged Gulls (2x1W on E Warwick, 1x1W and 1xad on Coppermill Filter Beds), 1m4f Goldeneye, Little Egret, drake Wigeon, 5 GBBGulls (4x ads, 1 x 1W), 2 Egyptian Geese; also brief & distant possible adult Glaucous Gull or HG/GG hybrid in failing light - head seemed a bit too clean for a GG, and wing tips not clearly seen (sigh) (David Callahan).

  • Queen Mother Res: juvenile Pomarine Skua still present today. No access beyond the car park (per FJM). No sign after 10am, ad Y L Gull in roost (Bob Watts, Franko Maroevic, Steve Spooner).
  • Clacket Lanes Services (anti-clockwise): Willow Tit in woods behind services north Side (Chris Wilkinson via FJM); also, Common Buzzard over.
  • Rainham: 2 Water Pipits by the Stone Barges, also 18 Black-tailed Godwits, 19 Lapwing and 1 Common Snipe roosting on the barges; nearby, 1 Jack Snipe flushed - no SE Owls over marshes at dawn (J. Murray); Dartford Warbler present at Rainham Marshes RSPB - directions from visitor centre (Birdguides).
  • Walton Res: Common Sandpiper (SBC).
  • Alexandra Park: 13 Redwing and five Fieldfare north early a.m. plus single Skylark and Meadow Pipit and steady trickle of Chaffinches (Dominic Mitchell), also 2 Kestrel, 2 Song Thrush (Des McKenzie).
  • London Wetland Centre: 6 Pintail, Bittern (SBC). Also Water Pipit, c75 Wigeon, 3 Snipe, 220+ Teal (Matthew Palmer).

  • Queen Mother Res: juvenile Pomarine Skua still present this afternoon. No access beyond the car park (Birdguides).
  • Tate Modern: At 1335hrs there was what looked like a large, all-whitish falcon perched high on the tower, where the Peregrines often sit. I only had a naked-eye view, though, so couldn't be sure. If anyone's passing with bins it may be worth a look! It was on the eastern face of the tower. Could be the Gyr-type escape that's been reported occasionally round London recently (Rob Innes).
  • Walthamstow Filter Beds: 92 Lesser Black-backed, one Greater Black-backed and 56 Herring Gulls, plus one adult Yellow-legged Gull showing head streaking like the ad LBBGs (but in every other respect a typical michahellis). On Walthamstow No 5 Rservoir, oppopsite the filter beds: 77 Shoveler (Dominic Mitchell).
  • East India Dock NR: 11 Shelduck, 151 Teal, 50 Mallard, 7 Tufties, 4 Little Grebe, GBB Gull, LBB Gull, 4 Common Gull, 120+ BH Gull, 2 Pied and 1 Grey Wag (Richard Harrison).
  • Alexandra Park (12:00-13:00hrs): 6 Gadwall, trilling Little Grebe, 2 Water Rail (Conservation Pond), Green Woodpecker, 2 Great Spotted Woodpecker, sub-singing Blackbird, singing Song Thrush, 7 Goldfinch (Des McKenzie).
  • Rainham Marshes: 3 Sparrowhawk, 8 Kestrel, m Peregrine, Water Rail, Grey Plover, 200 Dunlin, 35 Black-tailed Godwit, 2 Short-eared Owl, Kingfisher, Green Woodpecker, 21 Skylark, 6 Stonechat, pr Bearded Tit, 20 Greenfinch, 70 Goldfinch, 15 Linnet (ELBF).

Thursday 1st November 2007

  • London Wetland Centre WWT: Yellow-browed Warbler still present; Red Kite over at 12:40 plus 14 Bramblings over (Birdguides)
  • Hackney Marshes: mid-a.m. No sign of the Firecrests. 3 Little Grebes and a Kingfisher on the R. Lea by the Pitch & Putt course. A (possibly Large) White Butterfly from the house at midday, don't recall seeing one of those in November before (Paul Whiteman)
  • Horsenden Hill/Paradise Fields: 0700-0900 - Shoveler 7, Teal 2, Snipe 4, Woodpigeon 240 SW, Redwing 16 + 7 dropped in, Song Thrush 5 dropped in, Starling 700+ w, Skylark 8 wt, Meadow Pipit 4 West, Bullfinch 5, Brambling 9 west, Chaffinch 41 west, Lesser Redpoll 4, Mealy Redpoll 1 South.   • Walthamstow Marshes: 12 Meadow Pipits, 1 Skylark, 4 Linnets, 1 Jackdaw (Mark Pearson)
  • Lake Side, Oakwood, N14: 1 female Kingfisher, perched; 1 Goldcrest (Robert Callf)
  • Bermondsey: 10 Greylag Geese over, male Sparrowhawk, 3 Chaffinch and a Red Admiral(Dave Morrison)
  • Dagenham Chase LNR: Short-eared Owl flushed from long grass by a Golden Retriever at 3.25pm,(there's a good dog!), then mobbed by Crows before circling high South. 2 Little Egrets on the Slack then flew up the Rom valley towards the YMCA, pair of Stonechat, Cetti's Warbler heard by Hooks Hall Pond( Vince Halley-Frame ).
  • Trent Park: 2 Stonechat, c 20 Siskin (over Moat Wood and then Ride Wood), 5 Redwing, 12 Mistle Thrush, 50 BH Gull, 2 GS Woodpecker, 2 Goldfinch (Pete Lowman).
  • Trent Park Area: 1 Kestrel; 11 (5 ads., 6 '1st-winters') Moorhen; 32 Stock Dove, at Vicarage Farm; 1 Green Woodpecker; 5 Great Spotted Woodpecker; 3 Skylark, at Vicarage Farm; 1 Grey Wagtail, Lower Lake; 1 female/imm Stonechat, at Vicarage Farm; 8 Goldcrest; 3 Nuthatch; 1 Treecreeper; Siskin, heard calling; 18 Linnet, Hog Hill (Robert Callf).
