  • Minet CP: Wryneck at 12.05, park in car park at Springfield Road and follow footpath to pond to view wet channel (Birdguides). Showed well at 13.30 at bottom of ditch 50 yds past bridge south of pond on west side of country park (Peter Naylor); still present at 17.20hrs (Birdguides). Last seen at 1745 when it flew into ivy from ditch, south of pond (Bob Watts).

  • Wormwood Scrubs: c6 Yellow Wagtail, 1 Tree Pipit SW, c50 Meadow Pipit, 1 Whinchat, 1 Stonechat, c5 Chiffchaff, 1 Blackcap, c3 Swallow & 1 Jackdaw (Frank Clarke, David Lindo & Roy Nuttall).
  • Fairlop Waters: Arctic Tern (Birdguides).

  • East India Dock NR: Barred Warbler (1st-winter) in NE corner in Hawthorn hedge in between road and reedbed, c.10m west of gate in railings at 0740 & 0825 - showed well for ten minutes, preening and feeding; also Kingfisher, 49 Teal, 3 Chiffchaffs, 3 Grey Wagtails, 3 Little Grebes (David Callahan). Still present at 14.00hrs (Bob Watts & Chris Langsdon per DMc). Also 1 Common Tern, 1 Whitethroat (Gary A James).
  • Amwell Gravel Pits: Gannet flew northwest at 3pm (Birdguides).
  • Alexandra Park: Spotted Flycatcher, 3 Chiffchaffs 3+ Blackcaps, 8+ Meadow Pipits (Bob Watts, James Oates). Also; 2 Whinchat, 1 Yellow Wagtail (Stuart Harrington).

  • Trent Park Area (Vicarage Farm): 1 Queen of Spain Fritillary, 3 Wheatear, Stonechat, 2 Little Owl. Parkside F: Whinchat. Also; 2 Common Buzzard, 3 Hobby (per Robert Callf).

September 25 2006

  • East India Dock NR: Barred Warbler in NE corner in Hawthorn hedge 100 metres beyond red lifebelt (Andrew Middleton per AS). Still present 1.25pm in oak about 20 feet from red lifebelt (Bob Watts & John Archer). Present at 1800 (Andrew Self, Nick Tanner per DMc).
  • Alexandra Park: 1 Whinchat, 1 Lesser Whitethroat, 8 Meadow Pipts, 3 Chiffchaffs, 2 Blackcaps (0650-0720) (Bob Watts). Ring-necked Parakeet c 8am (James Oates).
  • Wormwood Scrubs: 1 Yellow Wagtail south, 1 Whinchat, c10 Meadow Pipit, c3 Swallow & c9 Chiffchaff (David Lindo & Roy Nuttall).
  • Fairlop Waters: Juvenile Arctic Tern on main lake, 2 Kingfishers, juvenile Sedge Warbler, juvenile Whinchat, Chiffchaffs (Brendan Spooner).
  • Kensington Gardens: Little Grebe, 2 Egyptian Goose (inc' pale-headed bird), m Mandarin, 10 Shoveler, 2 Ruddy Duck, Grey Wagtail, Meadow Pipit, 2 Chiffchaff (Des McKenzie).

September 24 2006

  • Walthamtow Res: 2 Egyptian Geese - the same as seen recently at Stoke Newington Res and Kensington Gardens, with the notably pale-headed bird (news from Pete Lambert via David Callahan).
  • Totteridge Valley: 1 Redstart, 1 Whinchat, 1 Whitethroat, 4 Swallows, 11 House Martins, 2 Common Buzzards (Ian Ellis).
  • KGV Reservoir: Black Tern, 2 Common Tern, Common Sandpiper (Martin Shepherd).
  • William Girling Res: no sign of White-winged Black Tern this a.m., but Black Tern (Birdguides).
  • Brent Res: viz mig - 82 Meadow Pipits, 2 Siskins, 24 Swallows, 18 House Martins, Hobby and a few Pied & Grey Wagtails; also Common Whitethroat (Andrew Self).
  • London Wetland Centre: Vis Mig: 95 Swallow south, 35 House Martin south, 201 Meadow Pipit south, 1 Yellow Wagtail south, 1 Common Tern west, 7 Song Thrush SW; at least 3 migrant Sparrowhawk high south + 4 + local birds; also 18 Chiffchaff, 1 Blackcap and 2 Sedge Warblers on site + 12 Jay, 33 Wigeon, 187 Shoveler, 11 Snipe and 3 Water Rail (Dan Monk, Rupert Kaye). Also; 1 fem/juv Garganey and 1 Kingfisher (Mike Wheeler).

  • William Girling Res: White-winged Black Tern - juv with 3 Black Terns still present at 14:00 hrs also 19 Black-necked Grebes, 1 Green Sandpipier, 1 Yellow Wagtail - private site, view only from park at top of Mansfield Park off A112 (Phil Vines). Still presant at 3.30pm and 2nd winter Med gull at north end (john murray).
  • Holyfield Hall Farm: Brambling, m Wheatear, Yellow Wagtail, 2 Green Sandpiper, 4 Yellowhammer, 4 Reed Bunting, 7 Swallow, Rook, 6 Meadow Pipits (Martin Shepherd).

September 22 2006

  • Hilfield Park Reservoir Nature Reserve: Laughing Gull was not seen in the roost last evening (though two 1w Med' Gulls were seen), Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust will be providing access again this evening from 18.30 to 20.00. Entrance 300m down Hilfield Lane from A41. £1 donation for conservation work at the Reserve requested. Access to the Reserve will not be available over the weekend but viewing will be available from the viewpoint off Dagger lane (Tim Hill, HMWT).
  • Walthamstow Res (south side): Eclipse drake Pintail, Wheatear, 3 Com Sands, 1st win Great Blackback, juv Com Tern, 4 Blackcaps, 5 Chiffchaffs (David Callahan).
  • Alexandra Park: 1 Whinchat, 5+ Chiffchaffs, 3+ Blackcaps (Bob Watts, James Oates). Also 1 reed warbler in cricket scrub late evening (John Murray).

September 21 2006

  • Hilfield Park Reservoir: No sign of the 2w Laughing Gull in the roost this evening but two 1st winter Med Gulls were seen. Access: The reserve will be opened between 1830 and 1930 ONLY on Thursday 21st and Friday 22nd September. Entrance is 300 yards down Hilfield Lane from A41. Thereafter, viewing will ONLY be from viewpoint off Dagger Lane. Donation of £1 requested for Herts & Middx Wildlife Trust (Herts Bird club website).

  • Wormwood Scrubs: 4 Whinchat, 1 Stonechat, 1 House Martin, c2 Swallow, c40 Meadow Pipit, 1 Chiffchaff & 2 Jackdaw. (Frank Clarke, David Lindo & Roy Nuttall).

  • Regents Park: A pair of Little Grebes have hatched some young, 2 Spotted Flycatchers, 4 Chiffchaffs, 60 Swallows, 80 House Martins, 30 Meadow Pipits, 7 Shovelers and 1150 Wood Pigeons feeding on the open spaces(Tony Duckett).
  • Walthamstow Marshes: 1 Lesser Whitethroat, 3 Chiffchaff, 1 Blackcap, 2 Kestrels, Grey Wagtail, 4 Little Grebes on canal, GBB Gull over (Mark Pearson)

  • Hillfield Park Res: 2w Laughing Gull (Herts Bird Club website).
  • Stoke Newington Reservoirs: strong visible migration early a.m, highlights being: Skylark - 2, Tree Pipit - 1, Yellow Wagtail - 1, Linnet - 3, Siskin - 7, Meadow Pipit - 14, House Martin - 65, Barn Swallow - 19, Sand Martin - 2, Woodpigeon - 230, Greenfinch - 60+, Starling - 130. Also 2 Lesser Whitethroat, 6 Chiffys (3 in song), 8 Wigeon, 2 RC Pochard, 3 Kingfisher, 1 Common Gull, and... the Egyptian Geese are back (hooray!) (Mark Pearson)
  • Walthamstow Res: (nos. 4 & 5 only) The amazing sight of an immature Peregrine (prob. male by size) repeatedly diving for our last remaining juvenile Common Tern, whilst being relentlessly pursued by about 30 Black-headed Gulls was this morning's main event. Also 2 Com Sands, c35 House Martins over, 1st win Com Gull, 4th Win GreatBB Gull, 7 Teal, Sparrowhawk (David Callahan).

  • Chafford Hundred: 1 Peregrine over (David Darrell-Lambert).
  • West Ham Park: 2 Pied Flycatcher (Birdguides).
  • Queen Mother Resr: juvenile Long-tailed Skua still showing distantly from sailing club (Birdguides).
  • Staines Reservoirs: pale morph Honey Buzzard northeast over; also 3 adult Little Gull still (Birdguides).
  • Tyttenhanger GPs: Osprey south at 09.30hrs (Birdguides).

  • Temple Mills 11:15 Large Raptor picked up low going North, seen from A12 with no bins. 15 minutes later after seeing all the Crows go crazy picked it up over the house in Leyton still going North, towards walthamstow reservoirs very slowly, circling and getting mobbed. Flat wings, long tail, prominent head and neck and with a bit of squinting some feint barring on axilliaries and flanks, a mid-phase bird, I'm fairly happy with Honey Buzzard. We also had a high large raptor flying SE over the City while watching the Arctics, (Tony Duckett).
