Saturday 30th AugustEdit

  • Maida Vale: White Stork circled high east over Elgin Avenue at 12:26hrs (free-flying White Pelican from St. James's Park easily ruled out) (Des McKenzie).
  • Sewardstone Marsh: Stone-curlew circled the horse paddocks just before midday then flew off east. Also 2 juvenile Whinchats and Spotted Flycatcher, plus Common Buzzard, Little Egret and Common Curlew over during the morning (Roy Woodward).
  • Rainham Marshes: Ortolan Bunting showing well at cordite bushes 10:29hrs until approx 10:45, then lost to view, and no further sign by 4:15, Nightingale seen twice by others, Whinchat, 2 Wheatear, 2 Spotted Flycatcher (David Bradnum); also Hobby, 4 Ringed Plover, Common Sand, Kingfisher - all seen on foreshore whilst not refinding Ortolan (J Lethbridge & Shaun Harvey); 3 Yellow Wagtails over 11.30am (Richard Bonser), Marsh Harrier, Sparrowhawk, Common Buzzard, 5 Yellow Wagtail, 3 Spotted Flycatcher (ELBF).
  • Beddington SF: possible Serin (seen twice in flight), 2 Common Buzzard, Hobby, 2 Peregrine (m/f), Ringed Plover, Knot, Ruff, 3 Green Sandpiper, 2 Common Sandpiper (Dip or Glory)
  • Crossness: Bar-tailed Godwit, 15 Black Terns east in evening (Ian Miller per JA) 17 Ringed Plover, 12 Dunlin, 5 Green Sandpipers, 1 Common Sandpiper, 3 Redshank, 88 Lapwing, juv male Peregrine, 160 Teal, 3 Swallows, House Martin (John Archer)
  • Walthamstow (near Walthamstow Central Station): a 'flava' Wagtail flew over low going ESE, called a few times, very loud and more rasping/buzzy than I would have expected for Yellow. I have no experience of the call of Citrine Wagtail but this was surely a candidate (Paul Whiteman).
  • Holmethorpe Sand Pits: 17 (seventeen) Common Buzzard, 3 Hobby and 1 Red Kite all drifting eastwards between 11.00-14.30, plus 15 Yellow Wagtail (Steve Gale).
  • Rotherhithe: 3 Turnstone on the River Thames at Durand's Wharf 9.25-9.40am at least plus Grey Wagtail & 7 House Martins (Richard Bonser).
  • Bedfont Lakes CP: Peregrine and Spotted Flycatcher. (Seamus O'Malley per Adam Cheeseman).
  • Richmond Park: 5 Wheatear, 1 Whitethroat (Neil Anderson) + 1 Whinchat (Franko M).
  • Queen Mother Res: 2 Black-necked Grebe mid-morning (Birdguides).
  • Tyttenhanger GP's: 2 Turnstone (Birdguides). + Golden Plover, Common Sandpiper, 4 Common Tern (Steve Blake).
  • Thamesmead: 2 Black Tern at Thames (Birdguides).
  • Brent Reservoircache: Hobby, Whinchat, 3 Green Sands, 4 Common Sands, Snipe, 62 Ring-necked Parakeets, 4 Tawny Owls & 2 Spot Flys; all in day total of 67 species (Brent Birders).
  • Alexandra Park: 3 Yellow Wagtails (W @ 0745, SW @ 0900, E @ 0900), juv Whinchat, 3 Spotted Flycatchers (1 Grove, 2 Cricket Scrub), Peregrine over Wood Green Res then over scrub and headed SW, c5 Whitethroat, 8+ Chiffchaff, Willow Warbler in LTT flock, Wheatear on cricket pitch, then in tops of tall trees on slope before heading north (Bob Watts, Andrew Gardener, Stuart Harrington, Paul, Gareth Richards).
  • Paddington Green: m Peregrine in the area from 13:20hrs to c14:00hrs (Des McKenzie).

  • Regents Park: Redstart, 5 Spotted Flycatchers, 2 Lesser Whitethroats, 1 Greater Whitethroat, 1 Garden Warbler, 3 Reed Warblers, 10 Willow Warblers (1 with no yellow tones apart from its secondaries and tail), 12 Chiffchaffs, 2 Swifts, 1 Yellow Wagtail and 2 Collared Doves (Tony Duckett).
  • Horsenden Hill late afternoon: 1 cc Marsh Harrier west, 2 Whinchats, 3 Spotted Flyc (NPS). Also 1 Wheatear early AM only, 4-5 Spotted Flycatchers late PM, 1 Coal Tit, 3 Lesser Whitethroat, 11 Common Whitethroat, 3 Willow Warbler, 1 Reed Warbler, 1 Little Owl and 1 Brown Argus, though no luck with the Marsh Harrier (Andy Culshaw).
  • M25 between J24 & 25 near Northaw: 1 Buzzard c15.30hrs (Nigel May).
  • Stoke Newington Reservoirs: 3 RC Pochard (unknown origin). 28 sp. recorded (TeRNScache) also 3 Willow Warblers, 1 Chiffchaff, RC Pochards's on West Res (TB via MJP).
  • Clissold Park: 1 Swift, 3 House Martins (Mark Pearson).
  • Staines Res: Black-necked Grebe 2, Wigeon, Ringed Plover 3 through, Golden Plover -> W, Knot juv S basin at 1700hrs only, Med Gull juv/first-winter, Sandwich Tern three adults 1905hrs and again 1925-1930hrs, Black Tern 1 evening (Rob Innes).

  • Enfield: Osprey flew SSW over Gordon Hill railway station at 15:20 (Birdguides)
  • Beddingon SF: Shag flew west, Common Buzzard, Hobby, 2 Oystercatcher east, Ringed Plover, Knot, Common Snipe, Black-tailed Godwit, Greenshank, 8 Green Sandpiper, Wood Sandpiper, 2 Common Sandpiper, 14 Yellow Wagtail (Dip or Glory).
  • Furnivall Gardens (Hammersmith): 2 juv and 1 ad Grey Wagtail (Matt Reed).
  • Dagenham Chase LNR: Lesser Spotted Woodpecker briefly (first in 4 years), 3 Spotted Flycatcher, 2 Common Redstart, 3 Lesser Whitethroat, 1 Green Sandpiper, 1 Common Sandpiper (Vince Halley-Frame).
  • Ravenscourt Park: 2 tiny, 1-2 day old, Little Grebe chicks with adult pair (Matt Reed).
  • Wormwood Scrubs: 1 female Common Redstart (1st for 2 years) which was found at the end of the dullest morning ever! (David Lindo).
  • Alexandra Park: 2 juv Whinchats still SW perimeter of football/cricket pitch, singing Willow Warbler Scrub, also 3+ Blackcap, Whitethroat, 3 Chiffchaff 0650-0710 (Bob Watts), 3 Spotted Flycatcher in the Grove (together) and 2 Whinchat still in the Scrub (J.Murray).
  • Paddington Green: m Peregrine in area from 08:00hrs to c20:00hrs (with 1.5hrs elsewhere), Stock Dove south, 45+ Goldfinch (best local count) (Des McKenzie).
  • Queen Elizabeth II Res: Peregrine, Dunlin, 3 Northern Wheatear (SBC).
  • Bowyers Water (LVCP): 2 ecl m Red-crested Pochard (Birdguides).

  • British Museum: Wryneck reported from Chinese Gardens between 15:15hrs and 15:40hrs (Southend RSPB).
  • Hospice Gardens (Clapham Common): 2 Spotted Flycatchers - 1 seen catching/eating a wasp (Neil Anderson).
  • London Wetland Centre: 70 Gadwall, 55+ Teal, juv Garganey, 65 Shoveler, 2f Sparrowhawk, Water Rail, 2 Kingfisher, 2 Sedge Warbler (LWC website).
