  • Alexandra Park: Viz migs: 0705-0730 - 4 alba Wagtails, 3 Blackcaps (Scrub), 2 Mipits (Bob Watts). 0743-0817 - Reed Bunting, Yellow Wagtail, 2 alba wagtails, 6 Mipits (John Murray); dark phase Arctic Skua west over gasometer at 18:10 - 1st skua record at this site (John Murray).
  • Staines Res: Leach's Storm-petrel at west end of South Basin 16:50hrs (Franko Maroevic, Oliver Metcalf); still on South Basin 17:50hrs but distant (Birdguides); present till dusk (FJM, OM et al).
  • Walthamstow Reservoirs: juv Gannet south over at 13:10pm (Laurence Bodini).
  • Beddington SF: 1w Mediterranean Gull (SBC).
  • Crayford Marsh: 3 Little Egrets, Stonechat, 3 Chiffchaffs, Grey Wagtail, Pied Wagtail, 5 Jackdaws, Kestrel, 2 Little Grebes (Kev Jarvis).
  • Crossness: fem/juv Garganey still on Great Breach Lagoon this a.m. (Birdguides).
  • Holmethorpe SPs: 5 Red-crested Pochard (SBC).
  • Horsenden Hill: Vis. Mig dawn - 0800 - Common Buzzard 1 SW, 7 Swallows S, 3 Song Thrushes SW, 6 'Alba' Wagtails ESE, 14 Meadow Pipits SW, 16 Goldfinches SW (NPS). Also 1 Little Owl and 2 Teal, 22 Meadow Pipits dropped in at dusk (Andy Culshaw).
  • Park Farm, Enfield: 1 Grey Wagtail, perched on barbed wire fencing (Robert Callf).
  • Plaistow E13: 3x Parakeet sp over (rare here) (P Fallan).
  • Rainham Marshes: juv Marsh Harrier; 45 Wigeon, 5 Pintail, 102 Shoveler, Great Crested Grebe, 6 Water Rail, 2 Common Snipe, 2 Greenshank, 2 Yellow Wagtail, 3 Grey Wagtail, 2 Stonechat, 5 Cetti's Warbler, 2 Blackcap, 4 Chiffchaff (ELBF).
  • St. James's Park: 1 Kingfisher, 2 Little Grebe (this years), 5 Gadwall, 3 Shoveler, 3 Cormorant, 2 Grey Heron, 4 Ring-necked Parakeet - Worth noting not one gull present (Michael Mac).
  • Thorney Park: Kingfisher flew downstream (Sue Giddens).
  • Tyttenhanger GP's: Chiffchaff, Tree Sparrow (in usual hedge) (Steve B).
  • Vicarage Farm, Enfield: 2 Little Owl, heard calling (Robert Callf).

  • London Wetland Centre: dawn - 11.00 am Spotted Crake north side of Main Lake from Dulverton Hide, 2 YL Gulls (ad & 1st Cal yr), 1 Kingfisher,6 Swallows SE, 5 'alba' Wagtails SE, 1 White Wagtail SE, 15 Mipits SE/SW 3 Stonechats, 1 Spotted Flycatcher, 1 Garden Warbler, c.20 Chiffchaffs, 6 Reed Warblers, 2 Coal Tits, 11 Linnets SW, 21 Goldfinches SW(NPS) Spotted Crake still present at 18.00, showing in late sunshine north side of main lake and briefly in flight (Martin Honey).

  • Hampstead Heath: 3 Meadow Pipits on Parliament Hill at 0930 in fenced off area (patch tick), Chiffchaff, Chaffinch (Sash Tusa).
  • Middlesex Filter Beds: - 13:15 Buzzard low in from South, mobbed excessively, gained height and went back South, 15 minutes later presumably the same bird North. 14:30 Walthamstow Marsh presumably a 2nd Buzzard flew North-west. 15+ Chiffchaffs, Little Owls vocalizing and 1 Meadow Pipit (Paul Whiteman).
  • Paddington Green: 26 Cormorant NE p.m., 3 Grey Wagtail (Des McKenzie).
  • Rainham Marshes: 4 Sparrowhawk, 5 Common Buzzard, 5 Kestrel, Hobby, large white falco sp west 14:50hrs (white underneath, dark back, feint moustachial, yellow cere and legs), 3 Peregrine (ad m and juv m/f), 2 Greenshank, Green Sandpiper, Rock Pipit, 5 Yellow Wagtail, 4 Grey Wagtail, 3 Blackcap, 6 Chiffchaff, 16 Rook (ELBF/per PW).

  • Rotherhithe: influx of Tufted Duck overnight with 49 on Canada Water/Greenland Dock (Richard Bonser).

  • Totteridge Valley: 5 Chiffchaff, 12 Ring-necked Parakeets, Sparrowhawk: on the move, 4 Lapwings NW, 9 Mistle Thrush NE and several 'alba, Wagtails (John Colmans).
  • Trent Park/Ferny Hill Farm (4pm to 5pm) 2 Hobby, 1 Common Buzzard, 1 Pheasant. Obelisk, 1 immature Sparrowhawk chasing Woodpigeons with no luck (Michael Mac).
  • Tyttenhanger GP's: 2 Hobby, Buzzard (Steve Blake).
  • Vicarage Farm: From 6pm - 1 Common Buzzard, 2 Spotted Flycatchers (site 1st) - in bush behind apple tree, Little Owl calling, 1 Kestrel, 6 Ring-necked Parakeet, 40 Black-headed Gull flying in a V north-east and Muntjac Deer along hedge bottom of field (Michael Mac).

Monday 28th SeptemberEdit

  • Crossness: fem/juv Garganey flew from lagoon towards Thames, female Bearded Tit by Great Breach Lagoon, Sedge Warbler, male Stonechat, juv Common Tern, 19 Black-tailed Godwits (John Archer, Ian Miller, Kev Jarvis).
  • Tower Hamlets Cemetery: Large Tortoiseshell yesterday flew from Scrpyard Meadow into tall birch adjacent to Cantrell Road c 2pm, first seen Friday in Poplar Wood (Bob Watts per Terry Lyle).
  • Alexandra Park: Tree Pipit over south calling, Lesser Whitethroat, 3 Jackdaws scrub (David Callahan); imm GBB Gull over WG Res 0744 then east (1st seen from Hornsey Stn 0739 by John Murray); 2 Common Gulls over WG Res, 11 Mipit, Jackdaw 0700-0800 (Bob Watts); Swallow north over res 13:05 (DC).
  • Brent Reservoir: 47 Mute Swan, 21+ Wigeon, 7 Snipe, 2 Green Sandpiper, 1 Chiffchaff, 1 Jackdaw north (Andrew Haynes).

  • Bedfords Park: Common Buzzard, Grey Wagtail, Firecrest (ELBF).
  • King George V Res: Black Necked Grebe, Ruff, 2 Common Sandpiper, 2 Grey Wagtail, 2 Northern Wheatear (ELBF).
  • Fairlop: Grey Wagtail, fem Stonechat (ELBF).
  • Downham (Whitefoot Lane): 2 Buzzard - 1 low to north 14:45, with second bird soaring high and drifting east at 15:00. (Dave de Silva)

Wanstead Park: Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, 1 Reed Bunting, Blackcap, 3 Pochard, 10 Shoveler, 7+ migrant Song Thrush, 2 Grey Wagtails on perch pond, Goldcrest (S Fisher).
  • Wanstead: 2 Whinchat near cetral track a.m. (Birdguides).
  • Banstead Downs: 1 Reed Bunting, 1 Swallow, 2+ Meadow Pipits, 1 Treecreeper, 1 Coal Tit etc (DKC, KJM).
  • M25 near junction 5: 4 Common Buzzards circling together (BLC).
  • East India Dock area: Wheatear (probable Greenland - large, bright head pattern, pot-bellied, buff all the way to undertail coverts) in yard briefly, male Reed Bunting, Saxicola-type chat sp. (unfortunately flew against sun, evading identification), female Peregrine over basin, with it or another on Dome at 10:10 am, ad Yellow-legged Gull on yard warehouse 10:05 am, 18+ Chiffchaffs, 2 Blackcaps, Kingfisher, 114+ Teal, Little Grebe, 2 GBB Gulls, 10+ Long-tailed Tits (David Callahan, Gary A James, and later Nick Tanner, Dave Morrison).
  • Alexandra Park: 20+ Mipits, 3 Song Thrushes, 2 Grey Wagtails, 2 Jackdaws viz mig 0700-0900 (Bob Watts, Stuart Harrington, Andrew Lyburd) also 5+ Chiffchaffs, 5+ Blackcaps Ckt Scrub, 2 Chiffchaffs New River Village.
  • Battersea Power Station: 2 Grey Wagtails, 5 singing Robins, 2 Chiffchaffs, 9 Meadow Pipit over, 16 Linnet, Kingfisher on river, Ring-necked Parakeet, 7 Goldfinch and 27 House Sparrows next to the Dogs Home, site record (Dave Morrison).
  • Oakwood Park, N14: 1 female Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, feeding in Poplars, 09:32 - 09:40; 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker; 3 Song Thrush; 8 Mistle Thrush, Pitch & Putt Course; 5 Nuthatch; 2 Chiffchaff, including a singing male (Robert Callf).
  • Brent Res: Common Buzzard flying west 08.15, 29 Wigeon, Green Sandpiper, 9 Snipe, 1 Swallow South, 9 Chiffchaffs, Blackcap, 3 Mipits (Roy Beddard, Andrew Verrall).
  • Paddington Green: 2 Hobby high south 14:40hrs, c30 Black-headed Gull SW, ad-type Great Black-backed Gull over, 5 Meadow Pipit, 2-3 Grey Wagtail, Chiffchaff (Des McKenzie).

  • Thorney Park:1 Common Gull,15 L T Tits,Dunnock, Jay,7 R N Parakeets flew over,5 Pochards,4 Cormorants,1 L.B.B Gull had a short stay 20+ Tufted Ducks(Sue Giddens)
  • Wormwood Scrubs: 1 Northern Wheatear, 1 Stonechat - 1st for autumn, 1 Snipe - 1st for winter, c5 House Martin, c10 Swallow, c8 Chiffchaff, c5 Whitethroat, c2 Blackcap & c12 Meadow Pipit (the Scrubbers et al).
  • West Drayton: Sparrowhawk flew down and took a Goldfinch from my back garden.(Sue Giddens)

Saturday 26th SeptemberEdit

  • London Wetland Centre: Spotted Crake again showing at 3.15pm from Durlston Hide. 2 Hobby, 2 Sparrowhawk, usual wildfowl, many Chiffchaff and mixed tits inc 1 Coal, 2 female Blackcap. No sign of YBW (although this was reported calling early am) or Firecrest - too many Greater Screaming Kids!! (Stuart Darbyshire)
  • Alexandra Park: 25+ Mipits, 3 Grey Wagtauils over Ckt Scrub 0700-0810, 6+ Chiffchaffs, 10+ Blackcaps, 7 Jacdaws (Bob Watts).Kingfisher at Tunnel Reservoir (James Palmer).
  • Barking Outfall: 2 Kingfisher, 6 Grey Wagtails, 9 Mipits over, Yellow Wagtail, Yellow Legged Gull, Blackcap, 154 Teal, 18 Shelduck, Common Sandpiper and Chiffchaff (Dave Morrison).
  • Brent Res: VisMig 16 Chaffinches W, 4 Meadow Pipits S; 26 Wigeon, Green Sandpiper, 9 Snipe, 2 Chiffchaffs (1 singing) (Brent Birders).
  • East India Dock Basin: Little Grebe, c.90 Teal, Yellow-legged Gull, Kingfisher, 2 Chiffchaff (1 singing), 10+ Long-tailed Tit (Nick Tanner).
  • Horsenden Hill: 1 Water Rail on Canal Pond, 1 Redstart, 1+ Teal (Andy Culshaw & David Howdon).
  • Lake Farm CP: Redwing flew non-stop W at 0940, Wheatear, Whitethroat, Chiffchaff, 2 Skylarks, 6 Meadow Pipits, Swallow, Jackdaw, flocks of 64 Carrion Crow and 16 Blue Tits, now I'm struggling (P Naylor).
  • Margravine Cemetery: 4 Jays, 1 Coal Tit with 2 Blue & 2 Great, mixed flock of 23 Tits, 2 fighting Wren; in area: 1 Grey Wagtail over Field Road, 1 Chiffchaff with Long-Tailed Tits in back gardens (Nathalie Mahieu).
  • Tyttenhanger GP's: 2 Green Sandpiper, Snipe, 3 Hobby, 2 Chiffchaff, Tawny Owl (called twice) (Steve B).
  • Westminster: 1 Jay, 1 Goldcrest, 1 Peregrine (Nathalie Mahieu).
  • Vicarage Farm, Enfield: 1 Northern Wheatear, pursued in flight by Jackdaw, 11:32; 2(1 male,1 fem/imm) Reed Bunting, Barracks (Robert Callf).
  • Debden (Loughton) along brook from Westall Rd to BofE Print works: 4 Grey Wagtail, 1 Kingfisher, 1 Green Woodpecker + 1 Hare in field adj. to M11 (Nigel May).
  • South Mimms (J23 M25): 1 Buzzard (Nigel May).

  • London Wetland Centre: Spotted Crake (north shore of Main Lake), Yellow-browed Warbler entrance lake area a.m., Firecrest wildside, 3 Hobbies, 1 ad YL Gull, 12 Swallows SW, 1 Rock Pipit, 48 Meadow Pipits W, 1 Redwing W, 3 Song Thrushes S and 11 on site inc. 2 'continental type', 35 Chiffchaffs, 23 Blackcaps, 3 Lesser Whitethroats, 8 Goldcrests, 2 Coal Tits, 8 Linnets.   • Rotherhithe: Pied Flycatcher Russia Dock Woodland in bushes 150 yards NE of Stave Hill near 2 small pine trees adjacent to Toad Hollow; also a Collared Dove (my 1st site record), Ring-necked Parakeet, 2 GS Woodpecker, 2 Song Thrush, c.15 Chiffchaffs, 5 Blackcaps (Richard Bonser).

  • Clissold Park: Marsh Harrier over high and NW 1432-1434, 8 Meadow Pipits and 2 House Martins over (Mark Pearson Hackney Wildlife).
  • Alexandra Park: Woodlark over filter beds 0805 then over between Blandford Hall and station 0807 (John Murray, Bob Watts), 2 Yellow Wagtails, Whinchat perimeter cricket pitch 0700, fem Stonechat scrub, Fem Reed Bunting until 0738 in scrub, male Peregrine, 3 Shelduck NE 0723, Spotted Flycatcher scrub, 20+ Mipits, 2 Skylarks, 4 House Martins, 2 Swallows & 3rd S Yellow-legged Gull over WG Res mid pm (Bob Watts, Stuart Harrington, Dominic Mitchell).
  • Clapton: Red Kite over, 1032 (Jamie Partridge per MJP)
  • Enfield: Goshawk circled low over junction of Hertford Road/Ordnance Road, near Co-op (Birdguides).
  • London Wetland Centre: 29 Wigeon, 146 Gadwall, 150 Teal, 105 Shoveler, 2 Hobby, 45 Lapwing, 13 Common Snipe, Common Whitethroat, 7 Blackcap, 30+ Chiffchaff (LWC website); Great White Egret on the grazing marsh at 12.10 then flew to the River Thames (RBA). Flew S towards Putney, may have landed again, at low tide though not relocated by 13.24 (per Rupert Kaye). Spotted Crake still on the Main Lake from Dulverton Hide 14:20hrs (Birdguides).

  • Bedfont Lakes Country Park: 2 Kingfisher, 14 Gadwall, Yellow Wagtail over (Adam Cheeseman)

  • Mill Hill NW7: Hobby heading South (Garden tick. Steve Blake).
  • Woolwich Ferry (ca 11am): Sandwich Tern following ferry amongst many Black-headed Gulls, picking up food items stirred up by propellers (Quentin Given).
  • South Norwood CP: 3 Shoveler, Little Grebe, 4 Swallow, small numbers of Chiffchaff, Common Whitethroats (CroydonBirders).
  • Broadwater GP: 2 adult and a first winter YL Gull. One of the adults was busy attacking a Moorhen. Also 20 Wigeon, 14 Gadwall, 128 Pochard, 66 Shoveler, 62 Great Crested Grebes, 180 House Martin, 2 Siskin, 4 Chiffchaff and a Reed Warbler this morning. In a quick visit in failing light this evening managed to pick out 3 adult YL Gulls (very possibly more [indeed just seen 5 adults & 1 1st winter reported on Birdguides]) amongst the 2000+ roosting gulls. Also 5 Little Egrets roosting (Martin Sullivan).
  • Thorney Park: 250+ House Martins swooping down onto lake, 3 Kingfishers, 1 Dunnock, 1 Green Wodpecker, 3 Gt C Grebes (1 juv), 1 L B B Gull, 4 R N Parakeets flew over (Sue Giddens).

  • Hampstead Heath: 3 Hobby, 1 Kingfisher, Hampstead Pond No 1: Lesser Black- backed Gull maurauding pair Great Crested Grebe with 3 small young, 2 male + 1 female Gadwall, brood 9 full grown Mute Swan cygnets with adults, 2 Tawny Owl calling seperate locations (Michael Mac).
  • South Norwood CP: fem Sparrowhawk seen briefly as it dashed out of cover to chase a Long-tailed Tit (CroydonBirders).
