Highlights of the monthEdit

November was a frustrating month for twitchers, with several rarities disappearing after being seen briefly by only one or two birders. They included a Great Grey Shrike at Rye Meads on the 3rd, a late Yellow-browed Warbler at Whitewebbs Wood on the 8th, a Richard’s Pipit at Rainham Marshes on the 17th, a Red-throated Pipit at London Wetland Centre on the 6th, and Great White Egrets over Sidcup on the 10th and briefly at the London Wetland Centre on the 26th. More obliging birds included a Slavonian Grebe that installed itself as a Thorpe Park attraction from the 10th to the 24th, a Red-necked Grebe on Queen Mother Reservoir from the 19th to the end of the month, a Long-tailed Duck that visited William Girling Reservoir on the 17th and 18th and another (or the same?) at Queen Mother Reservoir from the 26th to the 28th. And, of course, the reliable Spotted Redshank could be seen at Crayford Marshes almost daily throughout the month (although it had a day trip to Rainham Marshes on the 18th). The month also included 16 sightings of Woodcock, starting with a bang on the 1st when a bird met its maker among the City’s skyscrapers, presumably by collision with a window — unfortunately not an uncommon event at this time of year. The month also produced many sighting of Caspian Gull and Yellow-legged Gull (with half a dozen of the former and 22 of the latter at Rainham Marshes on the 19th), but very few Mediterranean Gull, with only four reported sightings, compared with figures in the 20s and 30s in the last five Novembers. Late-leaving summer migrants include a few Ring Ouzel, House Martin, Sand Martin and Swallow early in the month. Winter passerine arrivals included good numbers of Brambling, Firecrest and Crossbill, while sightings of Waxwing steadily increased. Wandering Bearded Tit turned up at Amwell GP, Brent Reservoir, Crayford Marshes, London Wetland Centre and Rye Meads.

Hi BE, just looks like a first year to me, has a shorter supercilium and rather washed out appearance and pale 'crest', quiet obvious when seen close compared to the 2 striking adults! Can't say I'm an expert though (SF). Thanks, SF - we're still scratching our heads here in Regent's Park over how many different Firecrests we've been seeing lately (at least three, it seems certain) so every little helps! (b_e).

To add my two cents' worth, it has no known favourite trees as yet so I would choose a sunny day to visit and first check the broad-leaved evergreens (holly, laurel, rhododendron, ivy and holm oak) on sunlit fencerows bordering a) Holme Green (areas 9/10/11, where today's bird was found), b) Queen Mary's Gardens (areas 17/18/19) and c) St John's Lodge garden (area 29, access via gate from Inner Circle road) - the italics denote where birds have been seen this autumn. Firecrests have also been spotted recently around the Cricket Pen (area 31), the northeast arm of the Boating Lake (areas 32/34/35 but fencing restricts access), Hanover Bridge near the public toilets (area 1) as well as the wildlife garden behind the Avenue Gardens shelter near yesterday's Waxwing (area 20) and the nearby fencerow bordering the Broad Walk (area 23); see map for location of all these areas. We're talking two or three birds (♂ and ♀) - Tony thinks there may be even more - circulating in the southern, 'garden' sector of the Park so this is turning into an exceptional season for them. Tony also says they tend to keep to their own species (but get chased by Goldcrests anyway)! Compared to the latter, Firecrests' "peep" calls are slightly lower-pitched and don't quaver. Good hunting! (birdman_euston).
