London's November highlights: Yet another rare seabird

What is it that attracts birds of the open sea into London? September saw London’s first ever Cory’s Shearwater and then October featured four Great Skua, an Arctic Skua, a Gannet, a Kittiwake and a Shag, plus a Guillemot at the upstream limit of the tidal Thames.

And now November has produced another rare seabird — but this time well away from the Thames and actually on the very edge of the London recording area. At about 10am on 7th November Barry Reed, a regular at Amwell GP, saw a small bird drop down onto the water. To his surprise, it was a Little Auk. It only stayed for a minute or two, but he managed a record shot before it flew off again.

(Other Little Auk were seen along England’s North Sea coast around that date, but it is rare for one to venture so far inland. In fact, Barry’s Dovekie is the first for London since a small influx in November 2007, when eight popped in to Queen Mother Reservoir. The vast majority of London’s 70 or so previous records have also been in November.)

And on the day before he snapped his Little Auk, Barry also managed a record shot of a Grey Phalarope at Amwell.

I’ve pinched a couple of Barry’s record shots to illustrate this article — and you don’t need a perfect image to prove that you have seen an exciting bird.

(Amwell can be a frustrating place for London listers because the boundary of the LNHS recording area bisects the site. November’s Dovekie and Grey Phal were both seen within the London sector, but in 2008 a Great Reed Warbler was found within 100m of the invisible line but was never seen to cross it to become the first ever London area record.)

Gannet, Kensington Gardens (David Element)

Another seabird sighting occurred earlier in the month, on the 2nd, when David Element photographed a Gannet over Kensington Gardens. It was clearly a juvenile, although it has been reported elsewhere as an adult. This is only the second recorded sighting of a Gannet at Kensington Gardens, after one in 1952.

Honkers and quackers

On the afternoon of 7th Nov, eight adult Whooper Swan were at Stocker’s Lake until dusk, but at dawn the next morning only one was still to be seen, and that soon flew off. The only geese of any interest this month were the odd Brent Goose at Rainham. Wintering Goosander and Goldeneye have turned up here and there, along with the odd Red-breasted Merganser, red-head Smew and Common Scoter. A Ruddy Duck at Bowyers Water (Cheshunt GPs) on the 17th was the first in London since one in St James’s Park in spring 2015.

Loons and grebes

A loon at King George V Reservoir on 2nd Nov was probably a Red-throated Diver, although some birders who examined photographs of it thought it was a Black-throat.

After his auk and phal, Barry Reed had further luck at Amwell on the 13th when he found a Slavonian Grebe. Another Slav turned up at KGV Reservoir on the 26th. Several Black-necked Grebe seem to have settled in for the winter at Staines Reservoir.

Herons and Egrets

On 6th Nov a Cattle Egret flew high over Woodford Green, and on the 8th a Great White Egret was seen over Rainham. But then on 14th Nov a Great White arrived at Tyttenhanger GP and was joined by a second bird on the 21st. Both were still there at the end of the month. Some good photos have been taken (eg, Twitter @simonwest26), but it’s a shame that none have been uploaded to this wiki. Bittern turned up at their regular winter haunts and a Spoonbill flew over Cobham on the 26th.

Hen Harrier, Walton Reservoirs (Chris Turner)

Birds of prey

A few Hen Harrier were seen during the month, and Chris Turner managed a nice image of a ring-tail at Walton Reservoirs on the 13th. A male Goshawk was seen at Fishers Green on 22nd Nov. A Long-eared Owl was heard at Waltham Abbey on the 13th. Migrating Short-eared Owl were seen at various sites, and Barn Owl turned up in some unexpected places. 


Waders

Reports of a Curlew Sandpiper from Rainham, Purfleet and Crayford Marshes in the first half of the month may all relate to the same bird. Woodcock were reported from various sites, including the almost inevitable bird found dead in central London after a window collision — in this case one found on the 9th below the Darwin Centre glass wall at the Natural History Museum.

Passerines

After a glut of sightings in October, Yellow-browed Warbler had disappeared by November apart from the Brent Reservoir bird, which stayed until the 4th. Dartford Warbler were seen several times at Richmond Park and Wimbledon Common and for one day only at Staines Moor and Rainham Marshes. And a Siberian Chiffchaff was at Bowyers Water (Cheshunt GPs) on the 17th (Barry Reed again). Plenty of Firecrest were still hanging around, and a few passing Ring Ouzel were seen up to the 21st.

Britain seems to be experiencing a welcome Waxwing irruption this autumn, but they have been slow to reach the south of England. Three or four birds flew over Greenwich Park on 5th Nov and another was seen at Rickmansworth on the 24th, but that is the sum total for the London area — so far.

Hi Tim, I think that there are more Grey Wagtails here than we think - both Pied Wagtail (highest count - at least 300+ roosting in Harrow Town Centre) & Yellow Wagtail (45 on 18/09/96 at Pinner Park Farm) have been recorded, which are both high counts. These guys flock together within themselves, so why not Grey Wagtail? - expect a double figure count before the year is out (JR)

Marsh, One Redwing landed in allotment tree, scoped, saw it had pure white secondary feathers, one on each wing, view from back, with left wing 1 and quarter inch length white, right wing only 1 inch white, nearly got digi-pic but bird flew (Andrew Verrall) - Hi Andrew, the pure white secondaries are retained juvenile feathers - therefore the bird is now first-winter after the post juvenile moult - as for the difference between feather length, autumn moult is often asymmetric - a bit like my feet - one is longer than the other! (JR). Many thanks JR for this, had no idea about it, got a shock to see it zoomed x50, the devil is in the detail, at last I've learnt something (AGV)
