  • Octobers Birding Highlights in London(from London Birdwatching)
  • Allens Gardens, N16: 2, probably 3, Firecrests feeding in row of yews near southern entrance on Bethune Road; also 4 Goldcrests, 2 Coal Tits, 13 Blackbirds maniacally stripping yew berries (Mark Pearson Hackney Wildlife)
  • Alperton station: 2 Grey Wagtail (David Howdon).
  • Amwell GP: m Bearded Tit from James Hide this a.m. (Birdguides).
  • Barnet Common (now fields): Buzzard around and perching. (again 1 hour later) pursued by crows. About 4 dozen Fieldfares and 1 Skylark (Geoff Crabtree).
  • Beddington SF: Shelduck, Peregrine Falcon, Dunlin, 12 Common Snipe, 5 Redshank, 5 Green Sandpiper, Common Sandpiper, 79 Meadow Pipit, 4 Water Pipit, 2 Siskin, Redpoll
  • Brent Reservoir: Brambling, 300+ Woodpigeon, Siskin, Redpoll before rain stopped play (Andrew Self & Andrew Verrall).
  • Cheshunt (Oylers Farm? - just west of A10 nr M25 junction 25): c40 Golden Plover on field - poss more but couldn't stop car (Roger Dewey).
  • Crossness: Black Redstart, Brambling, Coal Tit (2nd record in last 10 years!), c25 Skylarks, 4 Yellow-legged Gulls, 2 Cetti's Warblers, 75 Blackwits, 2 Oystercatchers, 3 Curlews (John Archer & Kev Jarvis).
  • Dagnam Park LNR: 6+ Goldcrests and 20 Long-tailed Tits in Hatters Wood (Green Lake area); also 10 Ring-necked Parakeets, Siskin over (CRJ)
  • East India Dock Basin / Bow Creek Eco Park: 4 Little Grebe, c170 Teal, Chiffchaff, 20+ Long-tailed Tit (Gary A James, Nick Tanner).
  • Greenwich Park: Skylark over, 5 Fieldfare over and 1briefly in trees, Redwings, 1 Brambling, Meadow Pipit, Firecrest/s heard near the Dell early on and the others seen late morning in Flower Gardens (JL, try around the lake); they can be elusive in all the cover (Joe Beale).
  • Grovelands Park (Southgate): 1 male Firecrest, near Church Hill entrance (Robert Callf).
  • Great Warley: Woodcock (over Dark Lane), 13 Redwing, 3 Meadow Pipit, Little Owl, Tawny Owl calling at Headley Common 16.55 (Colin Jupp).
  • Holmethorpe SPs: 2 Jack Snipe, Brambling (SBC).
  • Limetrees Park Golf Course (Northolt): 4 juv Mute Swan, c500 Wood Pigeon over (including c80 on site), 2 Stock Dove, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Skylark (down to 2 metres!), 5 Song Thrush, 2 Fieldfare, 2 Redwing W, Goldcrest. Across road off Sharvel Lane: Grey Wagtail, 6+ Meadow Pipit (Neil Anderson).
  • London Wetland Centre: 39 Wigeon, 71 Teal, 68 Shoveler, Bittern, 6 Common Snipe, 230+ Black-headed Gull, Cetti's Warbler (LWC website).
  • Lonsdale Road Reservoir LNR: 4 Teal, 1 Little Grebe, 100+ Black-Headed Gull (M Bourne); 2 Little Grebe and 1 Common Gull at 4ish (Rich Petley).
  • Mudchute Farm: 36+ Monk Parakeet feeding in hedge on north boundary of main allotments late afternoon, Great Spotted Woodpecker east (Nick Tanner).
  • Paddington Green: 2 m Red-crested Pochard low south (Royal Parks birds no doubt), m Sparrowhawk, Peregrine Falcon in area a.m., c30 Herring Gull, 143 Woodpigeon over prior to 12:30, 3 Grey Wagtail (1 of which was taken in flight by the Sparrowhawk just after 10:00), Pied Wagtail, 2 Redwing south, 10+ Goldfinch, 4 redpoll sp south 09:55 (flock), also several distant finches (probably Chaffinch) (Des McKenzie).
  • Pinner Park Farm: 3 Little Owl audibly exchanging pleasantries, 2 Teal (one drake) on the main pond & 1 very timely chiroptera sp. by the electric gate (Jon Ridge).
  • Rainham Marshes: imm m Marsh Harrier, Great Crested Grebe, 3 Little Egret, 25 Ringed Plover, 100 Dunlin, Common Snipe, 80 Black-tailed Godwit, 60 Redshank, 12 Rock Pipit, 4 Stonechat, 6 Goldcrest, 11 Bearded Tit, 3 Brambling, 6 Siskin (ELBF).
  • Rye Meads RSPB: Bearded Tit from Draper Hide a.m. (Birdguides).
  • South Norwood Lake: 2 Mute Swan, 2 Great Crested Grebe, 15 Cormorant, 10 Tufted Duck, c60 Black-headed Gull, 6 Redwing (over), group of 3 Chiffchaff, 3 Mistle Thrush, 3 Great Spotted Woodpecker, c20 Goldfinch, Long-tailed Tit, Greenfinch, 1 Pied Wagtail (John Watson & Gavin Hawgood).
  • Stoke Newington Reservoirs: v.m. from Lincoln court roof 07:00-09:30: Ring Ouzel south down the valley, appeared to land around Coppermill Filter Beds; 3 Bramblings, 7 redpolls, 3 Fieldfares, 86 Woodpigeons, 150 Starlings, Skylark, 3 Song Thrushes, 16 Chaffinches, etc.; Siskin, presumed hybrid Lesser black-backed x Herring Gull on the gull rings, 2 Coal Tits and plenty of Chaffinches at the feeders (Mark Pearson)
  • Thorney Park: 2 Goldcrest, Kingfisher, Grey Heron, 150+ Black-headed Gulls, 4 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, 30+ Pochards, 1 Green Woodpecker (Sue Giddens).
  • Turnford: c400 Jackdaw flying east to roost, calling loudly and wheeling around. Presumably roosting in Lea Valley Park (Roger Dewey).
  • Tylers Common: c40 Meadow Pipit, Reed Bunting (h), a few Redwings, Song Thrush, 2 Goldcrest, Sparrowhawk (Colin Jupp).
  • Virginia Road (Croydon): Brambling on private garden feeder 09:45 (Croydon Birders).
  • Wanstead Flats: Barnacle Goose (jub) (Tim Harris).
  • Wanstead Park: Bullfinch (allotments) (Tim Harris).
  • Turkey Street Station (Enfield):- Litle Egret in Turkey Brook (patch furst). Brian Dawton.

Common area - 1 Sparrowhawk, 15 Redwing over, 3 Goldcrest, Pied Wagtail chasing a Mistle Thrush, 4 Pied Wagtail, 3+ G S Woodpecker, Green Woodpecker, pr Chaffinch, many Ring-necked Parakeets (Michael Mac - Peter White and 11 participants on LNHS walk).
  • Watford (Cardiff Road): 3 Meadow Pipit south-west, several Redwing over early hours, Chiffchaff (Occupation Road) (Des McKenzie, Joanne Biscomb).
  • Dagenham Chase LNR: male Marsh Harrier 11.34-11.37am then circled towards Hornchurch CP, 6 Siskin, 1 Brambling, 1 Chiffchaff, 10 Common Snipe, pair of Gadwall, several Teal & Shoveler and 2 Jackdaw. ( V.Halley-Frame ).
  • Bolinbroke Grove - Battersea: up to 10 House Sparrows in bush in housing estate garden (Michael Mac).

  • Romford Golf Course: 2 Firecrests in tall scrub near the footpath on N side of the GC early evening; several Goldcrests and Long-tailed Tits (Colin Jupp).
  • Sainsbury's Nine Elms Car Park: 15 Starlings flocking on lamps (Michael Mac).
  • Stoke Newington Reservoirs: ad Yellow-legged Gull on gull rings, 1645, Cetti's Warbler, otherwise quiet; visible migration very modest over last few mornings (MJP)

  • Brent Reservoir: (viz-mig 07.30-10.00): Brambling, 68 Chaffinch, 8 Siskin, Mipit, 15 Redwing, 9 Fieldfare; also 23 Snipe and Lapwing flew in (Brent Birders).
  • Clapham Common (quick 1 - 2 round the park from 5:20pm): 50 Carrion Crow, 1 Cormorant leaving area; Mount Pond - 10 Shoveler, 1 Mute Swan (visitor), 3 Tufted Duck, 3 Egyptian Geese, 11 Greylag and 40 Canadas, 30+ Black-headed Gulls; Eagle Pond - 8 Egyptian Geese, 14 Canadas and 27 Greylags and 3 Canada / Greylag hybrids (Michael Mac).
  • Crayford Marshes: Barn Owl hunting at 7:20, 2 Brambling, 18 Fieldfare, 2 Redwing (Kev Jarvis & Steve Carter).
  • Greenwich Park: Firecrest in The Dell early afternoon (Sean Huggins). No sign of any Firecrests 16-17h, but 6 Goldcrest in the flower gardens (James Lowen). 2 in the Dell yesterday pm, though elusive, couldn't relocate the Flower Gardens birds yesterday though (Joe Beale); Note: The Dell is in Greenwich Park and NOT Greenwich Ecology Park as stated by Birdguides.
  • Hampstead Heath: many Gold- Chaf- and Greenfinch flying between hedges on Parliament Hill, 15 Siskin by Conservation Pond (Chris Bird).
  • Hayes, Tesco Car park, Cranford: 2 Waxwing at 13.30 but not again by 17.00 (Roger Morton).
  • Hyde Park/Kensington Gardens: 20 Shoveler (35 yesterday) (Des McKenzie).
  • Joydens Wood: Common Buzzard 12.30 (Conrad Ellam).
  • London Wetland Centre: 9 Greylag Goose (possible migrants, very wary and alert), Bittern, Jack Snipe, 12+ Common Snipe, 18 Fieldfare west, Water Pipit, 12 Greenfinch south-west, 3 Siskin south-west, 3 Lesser Redpoll west (LWC website).
  • Paddington Green: Peregrine Falcon in area a.m., still present p.m. (DMc).

  • Beddington SF: first-winter Caspian Gull (Dip or Glory).
  • Claybury Park and Roding Lane North: Coal Tit, GS Woodpecker, Green Woodpecker, flock of Long-tailed Tits, 4 Jays, Mistle Thrush, 6 Common Gulls, Pied Wagtail (Alan Hobson).
  • Crayford Marshes: Barn Owl hunting at 08:00, Grey Plover on foreshore, 3 Bearded Tit along the creek early p.m., 3 Brambling, m Stonechat, c54 Fieldfare, Common Sandpiper (Kev Jarvis).
  • Ealing Broadway: Peregrine Falcon (young female) on the spire of Christ the Saviour church, has been present daily since the 15th (at least) (Andrew Birks- occasional scrubber) .
  • Harold Hill (Sedgefield Crescent): Grey Wagtail (CRJ).
  • Hyde Park/Kensington Gardens (a.m.): no obvious overhead passage but a relatively brief visit ~ 93 Greylag Goose, 2 Greylag x Canada Goose, 21 Egyptian Goose, 35 Shoveler, 54 Tufted Duck, Little Grebe, 16 Great Crested Grebe, 300+ Black-headed Gull, 32 Common Gull, Kingfisher, Green Woodpecker, 2 Pied Wagtail, Chiffchaff, 6 Goldcrest, 200+ Starling, 11 Greenfinch; also Red Admiral and scores of Harlequin Ladybirds (Des McKenzie).
  • Kilburn: Red Kite flew SW over Kilburn High Rd at 1345 (Pete Mantle).
  • London Wetland Centre: 15 Wigeon, 82 Teal, 73 Shoveler, Bittern, 140 Black-headed Gull, 2 Cetti's Warbler (LWC website); Peregrine Falcon (SBC).
  • Paddington Green: 18 Herring Gull on local rooftops a.m. (DMc).
  • Pinner Park Farm: 1 Little Egret dropped in, 1 drake Shoveler on the main pond, 1 Little Owl in the disaster area, 2 Meadow Pipit over, 5 Fieldfare, 1 Redwing, 5 Long-tailed Tit, 1+ Bullfinch by the Garden Centre, 24 Jackdaw, & 11 Grey Heron.   • Romford Golf Course: Firecrest in hawthorn scrub on northern boundary (near A12), vocal and showing till 17.45. Also: 10+ Goldcrest, 10 Blackbird, 6 Redwing, 2 Green Woodpecker, Great Spotted Woodpecker and Jay; Tawny Owl calling near the clubhouse at 18.25, plus Noctule, Pipistrelle & Fox (Colin Jupp).
  • South Norwood Lake: 15 Fieldfare NW, c30 Redwing SE, 2 Mistle Thrush, 3 Mute Swan, 2 Great Crested Grebe, 12 Tufted Duck, 27 Cormorant, c50 Black-headed Gull, m Kestrel, 8 Ring-necked Parakeet, 6 Long-tailed Tit, 5 Pied Wagtail, c15 Goldfinch (John Watson).
  • Staines Res: Little Gull west, Rock Pipit (Birdguides).
  • Stoke Newington Reservoirs: 2 Waxwings low and south-east, 1400; Cetti's Warbler, Siskin, 8+ Goldcrests, Coal Tit; Red Admiral and Black Rustic in LWT garden, also huge emergence of Harlequin Ladybirds (MJP)

  • Leyton: 11 (presumed) Little Egrets flew North-east over Walthamstow at 09:15, quite possibly the same as flew North-west at Hillfield Res. 24 minutes earlier, though they would have had to double back. The Hilfield birds were seen at 08:41 flying south-east (Herts website), so allowing for a 90 degree adjustment & a 34 minute gap - looks like the same birds, which probably swung around to the north-east to avoid Central London (JR). Also in the area pm: 3 Common Buzzard, 10 Stock Dove, 10 Skylark (over NW), 3 Swallow, 19 Meadow Pipit, 6+ Song Thrush, 35+ Redwing, 1 Chiffchaff, 8-9 Goldcrest (2 singing), several Coal Tit, Treecreeper and Nuthatch, 8+ Jay, 3 Rook over with Jackdaws and 1 Cormorant over.   • Greenwich Park: many migrants generally W/N early a.m including Fieldfare (1st of autumn) with the many (200+, many moving) Redwings around / headed W, Song Thrushes, Blackbirds and 4-5 Bramblings (1st of autumn); also Redpoll, Siskins, Meadow Pipits (not so many now - c.14), Chaffinches W, and best were 2 Firecrests showing briefly in the afternoon (Flower Gardens).   • Wormwood Scrubs. Great Grey Shrike on bushes in long grass area this morning, 20 Skylark over north eleven in one group, 1 Whinchat, 3 Linnet, 20+ Meadow Pipit, 2 Reed Bunting. (N.Smith per Anders Price); to 08:32 at least (Birdguides); still there at 09:50, plus Snipe also in the grasslands (Charlie Farrell); shrike still present at 12.15 (N.Smith). As of this morning, the best place to see the Shrike was to stand at the eastern end of the grasslands, between the central copse and chats paddock and to look west along the 'forbidden path' (which has a sign placed there by H&F Council). The bird was spending most of the time in the small hawthorn bushes either side of that path. It did spend some time down on the ground, but was generally quite showy. Alternatively - try typing the corordinates '51.522319,-0.243802' into google maps. (Charlie Farrell). Cheers Charlie, much obliged. In a generally good morning for visible migration from 06.50-09.30 and then from 11.00-12-ish: 107 chaffinch, 96 meadow pipit, 21 greenfinch, 1 brambling, 5 linnet, 5 alba Wagtails + 1 pied, 26 jackdaw (inc 1 group of 22), 13 song thrush, 9 house martin, 13 swallow, 5 siskin, 1 wheatear dropped in briefly at the summit and then appeared to land on the lower fields (perhaps the rather bright individual found later on The Plough?), 2 Coal Tit, 2 Nuthatch and 1 Teal (Andy Culshaw).

  • Minet CP: Pied Flycatcher in main oak hedgerow mid-a.m. (Birdguides); still present late afternoon, in oak on W of path behind willow just N of 1st wooden footbridge. It isn't a very well-marked bird and didn't appear to have a pale wing panel (only seen through bins) but did have a wingbar. Certainly not spot fly though (jizz wrong). (Bill Haines).
  • Tottenham Marsh: singing m Firecrest at East Lee just north of Green Bridge (Birdguides).
  • Trent Park: 1 1st-winter male Ring Ouzel in Hawthorn and Elder near entrance to Water Grdn. 12:00 - 12:12 hrs; 1 imm Great Crested Grebe, Lower Lake; 5 (2 males, 3 fem/imm) Blackcap; 1 Siskin (first of the autumn!) (Robert Callf & Robin White). Ring Ouzel stll present late afternoon. Need to stand back from bushes until it returns or reveals itself (bob Husband, Fay Broom, Ken Brook Pete Lowman).
  • Vicarage Farm (Enfield): 1 fem/imm Common Redstart on wooden fencing, 09:40 - 09:45 hrs (a particularly pale bird with an obvious wing-panel - eastern origin?) (Robert Callf); I've seen two birds in the London area showing (white) wing panels. The first was in Dulwich in the mid-90s (small patch) and, most recently, a male at Hyde Park on 18th April 2006 (an extensive patch - though unable to judge how far the white extended onto inner and outer webs of secs). I never really got to the bottom of this feature in relation to nominate, despite speaking to both Martin Cade and Dave Walker regarding obs birds. Ended up assuming it was nominate variation as opposed to something else, but could be wrong. Neither bird was any paler than normal (DMc).
  • Wanstead Flats (07:00-11:30): f Ring Ouzel east of Long Wood c.10:15 possibly some first winter birds, too difficult to see in the sheeting rain, 2 Wheatear, 1 Stonechat, 10+ Mistle Thrush, 10 + Song Thrush, and an influx of Blackbird trying to chase off the MTs from the berry bushes, otherwise quiet more of a duck day - 1 f Teal, 1 f Shoveler, 13 Gadwall, 2 Pochard, f Tufted Duck, Mallard, Mute Swan, C. Goose, Little Grebe, 5 Heron, 6 Swallow (south), 4 Chiffchaff, Blackcap, possible L Whitethroat knocking two stones together, 15+ Skylark, c.50+ Meadow Pipit, 3 Pied Wagtail, 1 Yellow Wagtail, Siskin, 11 Goldfinch (8 in one flock), 10+ Chaffinch, 20+ Greenfinch, 9 RN Parakeet, House Sparrow (group in Long Wood - unusual, and on a Wednesday), Sparrowhawk, Pipistrelle (over Angel Pond first thing) (NC).

  • Hampstead Heath: 5 Egyptian Geese on Kenwood Pond without the large group of Mandarin Ducks who had been associating with them till today (William G).
  • Paddington Green: fem Peregrine Falcon in area a.m. (and into p.m.) with a second bird (unaged / sexed) south 15:25, Pied Wagtail, c200 Starling (DMc).
  • Pinner Memorial Park: 1 Greylag Goose on the pond - this appears to be the first record here & certainly the first I've seen in 29 years of visiting this site. Also 1 drake Tufted Duck (JR).
  • Pinner Park Farm: 1 Stonechat on Wakehams Hill around the pylon (PC58) - different to yesterday's bird, 1 Little Owl, 14 House Martin over north-west, 5 Swallow over, 1 Mipit, 1 Chiffchaff (JR).
  • Regent's Park: 2 very young (2-3 days old) Egyptian Goose goslings with adults (Matt Reed).
  • Richmond Park: at least 5 Stonechats in bracken W of Lower Pen Pond, 2 of them adult males - but all of them flighty and hard to count. Lawn Field (i.e. E of Lr Pen Pond): 2 Whinchats in rushy grass; 3 Stonechats, but quite possibly same birds as seen earlier W of pond. Just a very few hirundines, going straight through.   • Lonsdale Road Res: Teal, elusive Reed Warbler on western edge, not much else (M Bourne). Better around 5pm, between showers - missed the Reed Warbler, but brief views of a Kingfisher at the southern end, and at least one Goldcrest in the northern corner - both site ticks for me (Rich Petley).
  • Paddington Green: Peregrine Falcon (prob m) in area a.m. followed by a pair p.m., Grey Wagtail (DMc).
  • Parliament: Jackdaw over south calling @ 7.15 also 7 Meadow Pipits over, Chiffchaff- Victoria Park Gardens.(Dave Morrison).

  • Hyde Park/Kensington Gardens: juv White-winged Black Tern still showing well at Serpentine to 10:20 at least (6th day); also 329 Greylag Goose, 6 Greylag x Canada Goose, 70 Canada Goose, 15 Egyptian Goose, 5 Shoveler, 17 Cormorant, 2 Chiffchaff (Des McKenzie); tern still present this afternoon (Birdguides); tern still at 13.00. (S Haslem.) still present at15.00, small numbers of Swallow's over Serpentine (G Francis) . 3 Goldcrest in trees near west side of Serpentine Bridge at 0700, seen whilst I was searching for juv White-winged Black Tern which eventually showed at 0720 (KB.); tern still present 17:00 (Noel Lever per DMc).

  • Wanstead Flats (06:30-11:00): m and f Stonechat, Ring Ouzel (reported diving into Long Wood by Harry and Barry, Lee Valley birders) and a couple of suspects early dawn, Wheatear (Tim Harris), 5 Redwing (Coronation Plantation), Song Thrush, 12+ Mistle Thrush, c.30 Meadow Pipit, 3 Pied Wagtail, 12 Chiffchaff, 52 Swallow south (including one flock of 42), c. 20 House Martin (hirundines actually going south -ish!), Skylark, 100s Starling, Reed Bunting, 10+ Chaffinch, Goldfinch, 9 RN Parakeet, 2 Heron, Snipe (heard early in the broom field), Pochard, Shoveler, G & GS Woodpecker, 52 + Lesser Black-backed Gull, 30 + Herring Gull, 3 Yellow-legged Gull (+ numerous juvs in early morning feeding flock on footy pitches by the pavilion), Common Gull, Greater Black-backed Gull, BH Gull, Cormorant, 3 Sparrowhawk (including one very reddish female - not from these here parts), Kestrel and others (53 sp.NC/Tim Harris et al).

  • Brent Reservoir: 15 Snipe, 16 Wigeon, 340+ House Martins South and 42 Swallows South before rain (Andrew Verrall).
