  • Battersea Park Lake: from 4pm - 3m 1f Red-crested Pochard, 36 Shoveler, 7 pr Gadwall, 2 Egyptian Geese, 40+ Cormorants in roost and more coming in from the River Thames (Michael Mac).
  • Brent Reservoir: 21 Lapwing on mud, 39 Redwing, 24 Chaffinch, 2 Siskin (Andrew Verrall).
  • Crayford Marshes: Lesser Redpoll, 3 Rock Pipit, 5 Yellow-legged Gull, 2 Goldcrest, 3 Redwing, 4 Curlew, 12 Ringed Plover, Cetti's Warbler, c150 Redshank. (Kev Jarvis).
  • Crossness: 3+ Yellow-legged Gull (1+ ads, near-ad, 2ns winter), Curlew, Common Sandpiper, 15 Dunlin, 84 Black-tailed Godwit, Snipe, 4 Wigeon, 10+ Shoveler, 4 singing Cetti's Warbler, Stonechat, Chiffchaff (John Archer).
  • Hemans Estate Community Garden: Robin singing first time since spring, pr built nest but I think scared away by cats who made Blue Tits desert young in nest box in June (Michael Mac).
  • Hilfield Park Reservoir: no sign of yesterday's Eastern Crowned Warbler up to 17:30 - 3 Common Buzzard, flock of c30 Fieldfare and Redwing, Blackcap, 3 Nuthatch, c15 Siskin (G. Bailey, D. McKenzie, J. Thompson, D. Turner et al).
  • Queen Elizabeth II Reservoir: Shore Lark still on the south bank, no access without permit (Birdguides).
  • Regent's Park: Crossbill 8.10am east and Chiffchaff. For those interested having returned from a week in Cornwall, I missed Woodcock 24th on the ground, Short-eared Owl 5.40pm west 25th, 2 Short-eared Owls 8.37am west 28th also seen that day 15,000 plus Woodpigeons, 2000 Starlings, 2 Skylarks and 100 Goldfinches seen by D Johnson (Tony Duckett).
  • Roding Valley Park and Redbridge Lakes: 2 Great Spotted Woodpeckers, Grey Pied Wagtail, Lesser Black-backed Gull, 2 Common Gull, Herring Gull (Alan Hobson).

  • Brent Reservoir: female Merlin north at 07.35, viz-mig: 407 birds inc 295 Woodpigeon (Andrew Self, Andrew Verrall & Roy Beddard)
  • Crossness: 1st winter Little Gull briefly at outfall 08:15 then flew east, 4 Yellow-legged Gulls (2 ads, near-ad, 2nd winter), Common Sandpiper, 2 Curlew, 130+ Blackwits, 12 Dunlin, Siskin SW, 3 Lesser Redpolls SW, 3 singing Cetti's Warblers, 3 Chiffchaffs, Goldcrest, 8 Wigeon, 8 Shoveler (John Archer).
  • East India Dock Basin / Bow Creek Ecology Park: 162 Common Teal, 2 Sparrowhawk, 3 Peregrine together, 5 Common Sandpiper (high tide roost), 3 Meadow Pipit, 2 Grey Wagtail (Gary A James, Nick Tanner).
  • Greenwich Peninsula: 3rd Winter Caspian Gull & 2 adult Yellow-legged Gulls on Thames foreshore by O2 Arena at low tide, Peregrine flying upriver, Water Rail in the Ecology Park (Conrad Ellam)
  • Hilfield Park Reservoir: EASTERN CROWNED WARBLER trapped and ringed at 08:30 and released in the wood by the entrance gate behind 2 houses but no further sign up to 14.51 (Birdguides)
  • Lee Valley Country Park: female Merlin over to the west at 07.55
  • Northolt: Short-eared Owl (one, possibly two) in field (with brick wall, known as shooting buck) west of West London Shooting Grounds. Also, Little Owl & Kestrel,Sparrow hawk(Steve Pash, Dick Midleton & Jim Fell).
  • QE II Res: Shorelark 11:00 - Flew from South bank heading to North Bank (Clayton Burne). Still early am. . Feeding on the south bank tight to concrete wall most of the time @ 0645 till at least 0730 (Neville Smith).
  • Staines Reservoir: 06.45-08.30 2 Black-necked Grebe (S.Basin), 2 Little Grebe (1 N.Basin, 1 S.Basin), 40 Lapwing (N.Basin), 20+ Linnet (causeway), Juv. Shag (still North Basin raft) (A.Luscombe.) Also 1 fem Wheatear on s/west corner of north basin (Neville Smith)

  • Alexandra Park: Short-eared Owl (amazingly 1st for the site NE 0823 (Bob Watts) also viz mig 0805-1020: 600+ Starling, 75+ Redwing, 5 Skylark including one that landed for a couple of mins, 10+ Mipits, c10 Lesser Redpoll, sev Siskin, 50+ Chaffinch, 5+ Linnet, 6 Jackdaw, 80+ Woodpigeon + 2-300 settled 16 Fieldfare (Bob Watts, Andrew Gardener, Gareth Richards).
  • Brent Reservoir: viz-mig: 2,579 birds inc 1,550 Woodpigeons, 675 Starling, 132 Chaffinch, 4 Bullfinch & 2 Great Spotted Woodpeckers; also 10 Lapwing on mud (Andrew Self, Andrew Verrall & Roy Beddard)
  • Cassiobury Park: Tawny Owl calling early a.m. (D. McKenzie).
  • Clapham Common : Chiffchaff in bushes by Eagle Pond, Pied Wagtail (2) , male Sparrowhawk being mobbed, Cormorant (2) , Grey Heron , Redpoll sp. (2 in trees at Mount Pond) (Alex Bailey)
  • East India Dock Basin area: Peregrine, 2 Sparrowhawks, 1400 Woodpigeons (SW), 43 Redwing, 11 Fieldfare. (Gary A James).
  • Fulham Reach (Thames low tide count): 1 Great Crested Grebe, 2 Grey Heron, 1 Grey Wagtail, 3-5 Pied Wagtail, 1 Moorhen, 1 Tufted Duck, 73 Teal, 84 Mallard, 2 Common Gull, 170 Black-headed Gull, 5 Herring Gull, 4 Lesser Black-backed Gull, 20 Cormorant, 2 Mute Swan - also 1 Sparrowhawk forced to land in Frank Banfield Park by Crows, 1 pr Peregrine Falcon (new male making lots failed attempts at passing pigeons) (Nathalie Mahieu).
  • QE II Res:Shore Lark still present mid am on concrete bank. If anyone wishes to see this bird, it is beyond a locked gate. Although if anyone wishes to see it at this permit access only reservoir..... No one is allowed in officially. The entrance is at junction of Molesey Rd and Walton Rd. (Franko J Maroevic); still present to 16:40 at least - south-east corner and southern bank (S. Bacon, V Halley-Frame, D. McKenzie, A. V. Moon).
  • Hampstead Heath: Crossbill flew N at 1010, 150 Goldfinch, 200 Chaffinch, 50 Greenfinch, 40 Redpoll,25 Siskin, 10 Skylarks, 15 Song Thrush, 30 Redwing, 20 Fieldfare ( Pete Mantle)
  • Margravine Cemetery: 3 Mistle Thrush, flock of 28 Goldfinch + 1 Greenfinch outside my house/feeders (Nathalie Mahieu).

  • River Lee Country Park: Holyfield Hall Farm - Hen Harrier (F), the bird settled in a field east of the farm before being mobbed and driven off by crows, 2 Buzzards. Holyfield Lake - Whooper Swan. Seventy Acres - Bittern, Cetti’s Warbler, Little Egret. Hall Marsh - 2 Lesser Redpoll. (Mike Oakland)
  • Valentines Park, Ilford: m Shoveler, Canada X Greylag goose hybrid, 7 Mute swan, 2 Egyptian geese, 2 common gull. Cormorant (Brandon Anderson).
  • Wanstead Flats (0740-0930): 825 Woodpigeons, 4 Skylarks, 7 Meadow Pipits, 13 Mistle Thrushes, 36 Blackbirds, 86 Fieldfares, 132 Redwings, 390 Starlings, 11+ Chaffinches, 34 Linnets, with most birds flying W or SW. (Tim Harris)
  • Watford (Cardiff Road): Redwings over early a.m. with 5 Blackbird (D. McKenzie).

  • 300 Woodpigeon over south; c35 Chaffinch; 25 Goldfinch; 2 Bullfinch and a Chiffchaff (David Wills).

  • Crayford Marshes: Little Stint on the Thames foreshore, Short-eared Owl being mobbed near the flood barrier, Black Redstart, Water Pipit, 3 Rock Pipit, 4 Lesser Redpoll, 3 Siskin, 2 Water Rail, 2 Grey Plover, male Peregrine, 3 Fieldfare, c400 Dunlin, 3 Black-tailed Godwit.   • Horsenden Hill: vis mig 7.50-9.40 1 Brambling N at 9.05, 83 Starling, 12 Mistle Thrush W, 17 Chaffinch, 2 Meadow Pipit, 4 Redpoll sp., 2 Siskin, 22 Redwing, 3 Song Thrush, 453 Woodpigeon S. Also 1 Chiffchaff Paradise Fields, a Small Copper & 2 Red Admirals (Andy Culshaw).
  • QEII Res: Shore Lark still present early afternoon (Nick Tanner). The Lark flew over to Walton Res and out of view at 1540 (much disturbance today due to strimming); still present on south side at 17.20 (Andrew Self). Great White Egret flew low SE with a Little Egret 1512-1517. Last seen in distance heading south of Tolworth Tower (DMH).
  • Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park: 5 Mistle Thrushes, 35 Woodpigeon (Bob Watts).
  • Uxbridge: 12+ Redpoll, Pr Blackcap feeding in apple tree, Pr Bullfinch, 3 Goldcrest along River Pinn, Skylark & Sparrowhawk and 4 Rooks over the Bicentenary Garden, Brunel University (Steve Pash).
  • Wanstead Flats: 73 Chaffinch, 14 Goldfinch, 2 Siskin, 23 Linnet, 30+ Lesser Redpoll, 8 Reed Bunting, 54 Redwing, 16 Fieldfare, 14 + Song Thrush, 13 Mistle Thrush, 40 + Blackbird, 16 + Meadow Pipit, 6 Pied Wagtail, Grey Wagtail, 2 Goldcrest, 12 Shoveler, 5 m Teal, 50 + Common Gull, Kestrel (Nick Croft/Tim Harris)

  • Brent Reservoir: Adult Med Gull, 35 Redwings, 5 Fieldfare, 28 Chaffinch (Andrew Verrall). Med Gull still present 12.30 & Green Sandpiper (Roy Beddard)
  • Crayford area: 5 House Martin nests on Shearwood Crescent, all on the 3 storey houses. Thames Road Wetland - 3+ Chaffinch, several Goldfinch and Long-tailed Tit, Robin, Blackbird, 2 Moorhen, several Black-headed Gulls, 6 Ring-necked Parakeet (over), Carrion Crow (over). Barnes Cray Road - 17 Collared Doves on TV aerials along 100m stretch paralleling River Cray. Total of 270 Starlings on 5 consecutive pylons from Barnes Cray Road to just east of Slade Green-Dartford railway line. (Chris Rose)
  • Crayford Marshes: Hen Harrier ring-tail near Erith yacht club reed bed 09:45. Black Redstart, Little Owl, 3 Grey Plover, Green Sandpiper, 3 Rock Pipit, 3 Fieldfare, 2 Redwing, 2 Cetti's Warbler, 2 Curlew, c130 Dunlin, c140 Redshank. (Kev Jarvis & Steve Carter).
  • Gainsford Street, SE1: Black Redstart heard c1pm (James Astley)
  • Lansdowne Gardens - SW8: House Sparrow roost at dusk 25+ birds chirping away in a tree hard to see them but could hear them for sure (Michael Mac).
  • Larkhall Park - SW8: House Sparrow roost at dusk 20+ birds in a tree chirping away hard to get exact count (Michael Mac).
  • London Wetland Centre: Bittern, 4 Water Rail, Peregrine, Rock Pipit (LWC new website).
  • Manor Park Gdns, Lewisham: 2 Kingfisher (James Lowen)
  • Nine Elms Sainsburys Car Park: 1 Kestrel round lunch time perched for hour or so (Michael Mac). Note: Sainsbury's are planning to build over this site in next few years will that spell the end of the kestrels as the car park space is to be built over and the general area cleaned up including the market to be rennovated.

  • Trent Park: 3 male Shoveler, Lower Lake; 1 Grey Wagtail, by Lower Lake and Water Garden; 10 Goldcrest, but no sign of Firecrests for me today (Robert Callf).
  • Tyttenhanger GP: 5 Golden Plover, Water Rail, 23 Common Gull, 2 Tree Sparrow. (Steve Blake)
  • Vicarage Farm (Enfield): 15 Lesser Redpoll, feeding in Birches; 2(ad female and juv/1st-winter male) Bullfinch; 3 Yellowhammer; 1 Reed Bunting (Robert Callf).

Wednesday 26th October 2011Edit

  • Bursted Woods (LB Bexley): 16 Magpies at north edge of wood, with 11 more coming in over adjoining open ground towards dusk. Lots of Ring-necked Parakeet noise. (Chris Rose).
  • Canary Wharfe: Med Gull (Phil Laurie)
  • Clapham Common: Not much cooking. First 4 Common Gulls of the Winter. Now 8 Shoveler (from 4 yesterday). Couple of Redwing knocking around. Swathes of Woodpigeon. (Mark H).
  • Crayford Marshes: male Black Redstart , 2 Northern Wheatear, 2 Stonechat, 2 Egyptian Geese, 4 Rock Pipit, 3 Grey Plover, 2 Cetti's Warbler, 2 Goldcrest, c150 Dunlin,c140 Redshank. (Kev Jarvis).

  • Kensington Gardens: 4 very young Egyptian Goose goslings near Round Pond. (Matt Reed).
  • London Wetland Centre: Bittern and Jack Snipe (website).
  • Northumberland Heath (LB Bexley): 21 House Sparrows in garden hedge on Colyers Lane near Erith School. Approx 30 in hedge round school, mainly Avenue Rd section. 1 Heron over, accompanied - as often seems the case round here - by a few shrieking Ring-necked Parakeets. (Chris Rose)
  • QE2 Reservoir: Shore Lark still on north bank at 07:40 though mobile (Adam Cheeseman) On SW bank at 15.00 on moss near top of bank. (Adam Wilson per FJM) Plenty of Pied Wagtails and Meadow Pipits present too. Still present at 17:20 along the west side. (Adam Cheeseman)
  • Richmond Park: Bullfinch female briefly hawthorn valley 11.45, flew into Conduit Wood.(Franko J Maroevic)
  • Staines Reservoir : 1 Rock Pipit on causeway early am. Juv Shag on old rafts, Black-necked Grebe on S basin, E end, Peregrine over and 1 Common Sandpiper.(Bob Warden per FJM)
  • Stoke Newington Reservoirs: 3 Little Grebe, c20 Gadwall (TeRNS)
  • Trent Park: 2 Firecrest, including adult male, together, feeding in Holly, Moat Wood, 12:15 - 12:40 hrs; 1 Grey Wagtail, feeding by water outlet (Robert Callf & Robin White).
  • Tyttenhanger GP: Water Rail, Snipe, 2 Tree Sparrow. c60 Greenfinch at Willows Farm. (Steve Blake)

  • Clapham Common: 15 Redwing over Old Town at daybreak. Also flock of 40 RN Parakeets. Migging Mistle Thrush and Starling. (Mark H)

  • Grovelands Park (Southgate): 2 winter-plumaged Little Grebe, together, trilling (Robert Callf).
  • Ingrebourne Valley: Wheatear 1st Winter in first paddock and Siskin over (Shaun Harvey).
  • East Sheen Common: 1 Firecrest halfway down path between Bog Gate of Richmond Park and Sheen Road at 15:50. Was with a mixed tit flock. (Ian Strickland).
