Highlights of the month[]

There was no headline rarity this month. Perhaps the outstanding event was a large movement of Ring Ouzel. This began on the 13th with four birds at Canons Farm. The next couple of weeks produced 40 sightings from 15 sites, compared with only four sightings from three sites in October 2011. There were also over 50 records of Brambling, compared with only nine in October 2011. And a movement of Hawfinch late in the month resulted in sightings at several London hotspots. September’s Garganey stayed at Staines Reservoir until 3rd October, but the month was more notable for the arrival of winter wildfowl. A Long-tailed Duck settled in at William Girling Reservoir on the 7th and stayed for at least three weeks. It (or another?) was also seen at Long Water, Kensington Gardens, on the 10th. And later in the month London’s rivers and reservoirs produced sightings of Whooper Swan, Pink-footed Goose, Brent Goose, White-fronted Goose, Common Scoter (including 26 on the Thames on the 28th), Scaup, Goosander and Goldeneye. On the 23rd Regent's Park was host to a female Red-breasted Merganser (its third record). The winter population of Black-necked Grebe at William Girling Reservoir began to build up, with at least 13 present on the 27th. A first-year Gannet flapped lazily over Staines Moor on the 7th and an Arctic Skua was at Gallions Reach on the 26th. A  Glossy Ibis turned up at Rainham Marshes in the middle of the month (during a small influx into southern England) and London Wetland Centre’s first Bittern of the season showed itself on the 20th. On the 15th, Crayford Marshes saw the return of the Spotted Redshank that spent much of last winter feeding on the Thames foreshore there. It was present on and off to the end of the month. The 25th was a good day for Little Gull, with six at Beddington SF, one at Brent Reservoir and up to 14 seen from various Thames-side sites. On the next day Thames watchers saw more Little Gull, plus a Kittiwake and an Iceland Gull. Short-eared Owl numbers built up, with 16 sightings spread across the LNHS area. A male Hen Harrier flew over Crayford Marshes on the 29th.
