October's highlight: a Hawfinch irruptionEdit

My choice for Bird of the Month is the humble Hawfinch, which was seen in unusual numbers across London from 9th October onwards, following a mass dispersal from Eastern Europe. Any London birder out and about regularly during October stood a fair chance of clocking this shy bird flitting overhead and perhaps dropping down briefly.

London normally records a few wandering Hawfinch in October, and last year this wiki had five reports totalling seven birds. But October 2017 has been a record-breaking month, with more than 60 sightings totalling more than 200 birds, ranging from ones and twos up to a flock of 40.

And still they come.

Although I usually nominate a twitchable rarity as my B-of-the-M, I settled on the Hawfinch irruption because the only rare birds that stayed around long enough for birders to catch up with them were a couple of pre-twitched rednecks: the Red-necked Grebe at Roding Valley Meadows LNR, which stayed from 22nd Sep to 25th Oct, and a Red-necked Phalarope at Staines Reservoir from 20th to 22nd Oct, following an earlier bird at the same site from 11th to 14th Sep.

In other circumstances my choice might have been Leach’s Storm-petrel or Corncrake, but neither of these birds lingered to show themselves to more than one observer. The Leachie, which circled low over Barnes on 8th Oct, was the first reported in London since autumn 2009. And the Creaker, flushed at Wanstead Flats on the 22nd, was only the second in London this century, following a juvenile in August 2010 that ended its days as a lunchtime snack for a Grey Heron. Another elusive bird was a Spotted Crake that was heard but not seen at Tyttenhanger GPs on the 20th.

Muddy Staines Edit

By the start of October the wader-fest in the muddy drained south basin of Staines Reservoir was coming to an end. But the site continued to attract some good waders, albeit in smaller numbers. Apart from the above-mentioned RN Phal, there were further reports of Avocet, Grey Plover, Ruff, Curlew Sandpiper and Little Stint, among others. In addition Staines had early sightings of winter wildfowl, with four Barnacle Goose on the 7th and a Brent Goose on the 8th. Other notable wildfowl included three Whooper Swan at Rainham Marshes on the 29th and 20 Pink-footed Goose over Tottenham on the same day.

Birds of prey Edit

Another stand-out bird at Staines was the Merlin that took a liking to the reservoir early in September and stayed for more than a month. It was last seen over Staines Moor on 6th Oct. Elsewhere, a juvenile Goshawk has been seen more than once at Fryent Country Park, suggesting that this species may have bred not a million miles from north-west London. Other birds of prey included a late Honey Buzzard over Woodlands Farm NR on the 17th and a few sightings of Short-eared Owl here and there.

Other non-passerines Edit

Great White Egret were seen briefly on 10 occasions, so perhaps this species is becoming too frequent to mention in the monthly round-up. A Spoonbill settled in at Rainham Marshes from 16th to 24th Oct. A Cuckoo in Nazeing on 8th Oct was surprisingly late, although still 17 days short of the London record set in 1994. And an unusually late Arctic Tern was at Dulwich Park boating lake on the 11th. The autumn’s first Woodcock — sadly also the first Woodcock casualty of the year — was a bird found dead beneath an Aldgate window on the 19th.

And last but not least, the passerines Edit

Wintering Rock Pipit and Water Pipit began to appear this month, but the star passerine was Red-throated Pipit, with one bird over Rainham Marshes on the 9th and another over Berrylands on the 17th. These were the first sightings of this rare vagrant since Oct 2013. Following an early bird on 26th Sep, the second Ring Ouzel of the autumn was seen on the 14th, after which numbers steadily increased. And while the Woozles were leaving us, winter thrushes were arriving, with Redwing aplenty, although surprisingly few Fieldfare as yet. Yellow-browed Warbler and Firecrest were reported from various London sites. Although both were once rare in London, these winter visitors are becoming somewhat ho-hum and may not merit inclusion here in future. Apart from the B-of-the-M Hawfinch, the emberizids (finches and buntings) provided some interesting sightings, including both Snow Bunting and Lapland Bunting at Gallions Reach (15th and 25th, respectively). A Lap Bunt also flew over Regent’s Park on the 24th, while a Snow Bunt was reported at Totteridge Valley on the 29th.

Long-tailed Tit (Samuel Levy)

In my September round-up I lamented that it was weeks since anyone had posted any images to this wiki. Since then Samuel Levy has uploaded a number of photographs, and I have chosen to illustrate this paragraph with his colourful image of a Long-tailed Tit surrounded by red berries. Samuel would no doubt be the first to admit that his pics (like my own) may not win any major prizes — after all, we cannot all afford to spend thousands of pounds on elaborate equipment — but his images are delightful for being honest records of London birds. So please keep them coming.
