  • Alexandra Park: Unusually high numbers of wildfowl including 2 Shoveler, 12 Pochard and around 40 Tufted Duck. Also Kestrel and Coal Tit in Avenue Gardens (Mike Benyon) Sev Mipits, sev Goldcrests,10+ Chiffchaffs (Bob watts, Dave Callahan).
  • Bankside SE1: Chiffchaff singing in tree by Globe Theatre. 3 m Blackcap in birches and berry bushes at east end of Tate Modern. Calling Meadow Pipit flew west. (Simon Fogg)
  • Crayford Marshes: Curlew Sandpiper flew west upriver early a.m. 2 Lesser Redpoll, Wheatear, Curlew, 27 Black-tailed Godwit, Cetti's Warbler, 7 Yellow-legged Gull. (Kev Jarvis).
  • Exeter Road NW2: Tawny Owl calling from garden 8pm, first time heard in 18 years (L Wormald)
  • Fenchurch Street Station, just east of: female Peregrine perched 8.30 then flew east (James A)
  • Fulham Reach (low tide count): 4(+?) Grey Wagtail, 2 Pied Wagtail, 2 Grey Heron, 17 Cormorant, 5 Egyptian Goose, 12 Mute Swan (inc 3 juveniles), 125 Mallard, 15 Tufted Duck, 45 Teal, 2 Moorhen, 141 Black-headed Gull (inc Finnish ringed 1), 5 Lesser Black-back Gull, 14 Herring, 1 Great Black-back Gull, 1 Robin on boat pier again, 49+ Carrion Crow on Harrods Depository & 2 nearby trees (Nathalie Mahieu).

  • Potter's Fields, SE1: Kestrel, Sparrowhawk, juv Common Tern 12.45 (James A)
  • Rainham Marshes: Spoonbill Dick Jeffree & Steve Smith per VHF.

  • Stockwell (outside my flat): 1 Kestrel on Sainsbury's Car Park on light fitting, Garden Orb Spider made a web overnight and caught a wasp took over 3 hours to consume it (Michael Mac).

  • Blackheath: Meadow Pipit 5 over 8-830 (James Lowen)
  • Bushy Park (eastern side): 3 Whinchat, 1 Stonechat (Roger Unite).
  • Crayford Marshes: 2 Sandwich Tern, Hobby, Whinchat, Cetti's Warbler, 3 Yellow-legged Gull, 3 Snipe, 2 Wigeon, 12 Common Tern. (Kev Jarvis & Steve Carter).
  • Hackney (Clapton garden): Female Goshawk, picked up being mobbed briefly by a Herring Gull, gained height quickly and drifted N/NW 13.22 (Jamie Partridge)
  • Hammersmith Broadway: 1 Pied Wagtail on Coca Cola building (only ever seen pigeons there!) (Nathalie Mahieu).
  • Kings Cross: female Sparrowhawk hunting low over the station entrance at dusk (Ian Ellis).
  • London WC1: Kestrel briefly on a chimneypot in Bedford Avenue, soon seen off by a Crow. First sighting of a Kestrel here this year (Simon Bradley)
  • Southgate (Chase Rd, N14): 1 Chiffchaff, feeding and calling in Yew & Lime tree, 08:20 hrs, whilst I was waiting for bus (Robert Callf).

  • West Drayton: Red Kite over at 2.10pm flying towards Heathrow.(Sue Giddens)
  • Wormwood Scrubs: 1 winter male Common Redstart, 20+ Chiffchaff, 10+ Blackcap, 1 Common Whitethroat, Jackdaw, Jay, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Kestrel, Sparrowhawk, 50+ Meadow Pipit. Lots of Pied Wagtail passing overhead and c25 fast moving Red Admiral heading west (David Lindo, Charlie Farrell).

Wednesday 28th September 2011Edit

  • EC1, Charterhouse Street: Black Redstart singing at 12.30. Has not been here for over 1 month. (Bob Beaumont).
  • EC1; Hatton Garden: Black Redstart, adult male singing from an ariel on the corner of Hatton Garden and Greville Street at 9am (Andrew Birks)
  • Alexandra Park: noticeable influx of Robins and, in particular, Dunnocks around cricket scrub and perimeter. (Gareth Richards). 15+ Mipits (Bob Watts).
  • Cowley: Skylark calls heard overhead @ 08.00. (Roger Dewey)
  • Crayford Marshes: 3 Sandwich Tern, Turnstone, Whinchat, 26 Black-tailed Godwit, 9 Little Egret, 2 Cetti's Warbler, Greenshank, 3 Yellow-legged Gull, Snipe, 3 Rook, 8 Jackdaw. (Kev Jarvis).
  • Croxley Common Moor (brief visit): Blackcap, at least 7 Chiffchaff, 5 Small Heath (D. McKenzie).
  • Fulham Reach: 33 House Sparrow in usual bush by Crabtree Wharf + more heard along the Thames Path (Nathalie Mahieu).
  • Fulham Sands End: 1 Common Gull (first & a regular, recognisable by deformed foot) (Nathalie Mahieu).
  • Greenwich Park: Probable Firecrest/s heard, Goldcrests, c 40 Meadow Pipits S/SW, Siskins, 3 Great Spotted Woodpeckers flying over together, 2 Redpolls, Linnets. Interestingly 2 separate Red Admirals moving fast, low, directly south over the open expanse of nearby Blackheath were surely migrating (Joe Beale).
  • Highgate-Waterlow Park: 1 Redwing, 2 Meadow Pipits over, large mixed flock inc 5 Blackcaps, 2 Chiffchaffs and 2 Goldcrests (P.Angus)
  • Osterley Park: Tawny Owl 1. Tree Pipit 2 (separate) flyovers heading south(ish). Reed Bunting 1. Whinchat 1. Also probable Redwing heard c06.30. (K.Fisher)
  • South Norwood Lake: 3 Redwing, pair Mute Swan, Great Crested Grebe, c20 Tufted Duck, 6 Cormorant, 3 House Martin, 2juv Sparrowhawk + 1f later, 1 Green Woodpecker, 3 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 2 Nuthatch, 2 Chiffchaff, c6 Long-tailed Tit, 1 Coal Tit 3 Collared Dove, c20 Goldfinch, Greenfinch, Chaffinch, 2 House Sparrow, 1 Small Copper 1 Large White, 1 Red Admiral, ( John Watson & Gavin Hawgood)
  • Totteridge Valley: 58 House Martins in a single flock lingering this evening, also Common Buzzard, 2 Meadow Pipit, 18 Ring-necked Parakeets, 2 Chiffchaff, 2 Little Owls calling. (Ian Ellis)
  • Uxbridge: 1 Red Kite soaring over Chiltern View Road @ 13.00. (Roger Dewey)
  • Vauxhall: 1 Peregrine [a pigeon] at 1:25pm (Michael Mac).
  • Wormwood Scrubs: 4 Redwing - 1st for the autumn, 1 Hobby, 1 Peregrine, c10 Swallow south, c30 Meadow Pipit, c3 Jackdaw, 12 Siskin south & c2,000 Rose-ringed Parakeet leaving their roost. (Rob Ayers & David Lindo) 1820hrs 1 Whinchat in the long grass area. (Neville Smith).

  • Brookmill Park (Lewisham): 1 Kingfisher, 2 Chiffchaff. (Conrad Ellam)
  • Broomfield Park (Palmers Green, N13): 3 Egyptian Geese on boating lake, 1 Greylag Goose near greenhouse. (Katy M)
  • Clapham Common: Meadow Pipit over (Mark Hiley)
  • Crayford Marshes: Ruff, 5 Yellow-legged Gull, 3 Goldcrest, Wheatear, Greenshank, 3 Common Sandpiper, 16 Ringed Plover, 5 Dunlin, 12 Redshank. (Kev Jarvis).
  • East India Dock Basin NR: No confirmed sighting of Barred Warbler by 13.30. Kingfisher, L.Redpoll, Siskin (over), Reed Warbler, 4 Chiffchaffs, 2 Reed Buntings and a presumed escape Saker/Lanner. (John Archer, Gary A James). Redwing over in the gloom early morning. Kingfisher. (Paul Whiteman)
  • Greenwich Park: 30+ Meadow Pipits over (S) around 10.00, including flock of at least 15, Kestrel distant and high up. In the afternoon, nearby, 3 Swallows and c25 House martins over and another 4 Meadow pipits S. Few Chiffchaffs left today, seemingly. (Joe Beale)
  • Little Britain (Iver/Cowley): 2 Jays, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Nuthatch, 10 Ring-necked Parakeets, Song Thrush, 2 Blackcaps m/f, Sparrowhawk,Chaffinch.(Sue Giddens).
  • Mudchute (Isle of Dogs) At least 6 Chiffchaff & 4 Blackcap (Conrad Ellam) + Monks Parakeets
  • Queens Wood: 1 Hobby early morning (Andrew Lyburn)
  • Regent's Park: Water Rail back in ditch, 68 Swallows, 2 House Martins, 6 Blackcaps, 14 Chiffchaffs, Lesser Redpoll (Tony Duckett).
  • Staines Reservoir: in the evening, immature Shag still N basin, plus two Black, one Common and one Arctic Terns (Rob Innes).
  • Totteridge Valley: Still 1 Whinchat and 1 Stonechat, Siskins over, 24 Ring-necked Parakeet,s (T. Clancy) Afternoon sun produced 2 Hobbies: 1 Common Buzzard: 1 Sparrowhawk: 1 Kestrel: 2 Meadow Pipits plus several Chiffchaffs and Blackcaps. Also two separate Foxes (John Colmans)
  • South Norwood Lake: 1 Redwing, (John Watson & Gavin Hawgood)
  • Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park: 2 Chiffchaff, male Blackcap, 2 Goldcrests (Bob Watts).
  • Trent Park: Common Redstart (Ad m), Old Golf Course. Tawny Owl calling ( E edge of Ride Wood),6 Swallow, Shoveller (m), Mandarin(f), 2 R N Parakeet,3 Chiffchaff. ( Pete Lowman).
  • Walthamstow Reservoirs: Short-eared Owl, Common Buzzard, Hobby, 4 Wheatear (Kevin J Mcmanus).
  • Wimbledon Common: 1 Northern Wheatear on the Meadow (photo on Wiki) and 1 Stonechat at the Causeway Scrub (David Wills). Also 7 Siskin on the Large Mound (Adrian Podmore).
  • Wormwood Scrubs: 30+ Meadow Pipits, Kestrel, 2+ Chiffchaff, Great Spotted Woodpecker (Charlie Farrell) 1630-1830hrs 1 Goldcrest at the west end of Scrubs lane wood, 1 Spotted Flycatcher in the Central copse. Monday 26th September 2011Edit

  • Alexandra Park; 09.30 hrs. At least 3 Redwings, high in trees bordering Race Track behind Cricket Scrub (J.Cooke).
  • Battersea Park Lake: 1 Shoveler, severalGadwall, Black-headed Gulls gathering, looks like Egyptian Geese flown, 6 Grey-lag Geese and usual boring species ;) and a pink pig flying by the Power Station (Michael Mac).
  • Bay Farm (Enfield): 12 Yellow Wagtail, feeding amongst cattle, 15:20 hrs, including one showing characteristics of Blue-headed race 'flava' (Robert Callf).
  • East India Dock Basin: 1st winter Barred Warbler in scrub by NW coner of basin till 5.20pm at least but very skulking and elusive. Also 83 Teal, 6 Tufted Ducks, 2 Blackcaps, 2 Chiffchaffs, Reed Bunting, Great Spotted Woodpecker (John Archer, Gary A James et al).
  • Hornsey (New River): 1 Kingfisher (James Palmer)
  • Lavender Hill Cemetery (Enfield): 1 female Bullfinch (Robert Callf).
  • Osterley Park: Stonechat 1. Whinchat 2. Swallow c30 passing through westwards. (K.Fisher)
  • Isleworth; 40 to 50 Swallow heading south in the space of 1hour,Sparrowhawk,Hobby (Les Mccallum).
  • Kew Bridge: male Peregrine over railway station 17h05 (James Lowen)
  • Nine Elms Sainsbury's Car Park: calling Kestrel at 10am, female present 3 hours in afternoon (Michael Mac).
  • Regents Park : on my way to work this morning I saw two terns on the lake however hey were both Common. They then flew strongly South. (observer?)
  • South Norwood Lake: Mute Swan, Great Crested Grebe +3juv, 15 Tufted Duck, 2 Cormorant, Sparrowhawk, 2 Goldcrest, 1 Collared Dove, 1 green Woodpecker, 3 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 5 Nuthatch, 8 Chiffchaff, 6 jay, c10 Long-tailed Tit, c30 Goldfinch, Chaffinch, Greenfinch, 1 House Sparrow (first this month) (John Watson & Gavin Hawgood)
  • Staines Reservoir : Black Necked Grebe (south basin), Black Tern, Arctic Tern, 8 Yellow Wagtail 20+ Meadow Pipit, Shag(2nd raft)20+Linnet, Peregrine(At rear North basin in front of hanger) (Andrew Miller). In heavy rain, a Great Skua landed on the S basin at about 1735hrs, but flew off at about 1745hrs soon after the rain had stopped. Over KGVI Res it was chased around by a Peregrine, then flew steadily high W. A dark adult-type, in early primary moult and with rather ragged secondaries. Also five Goldeneye on the S basin (Rob Innes).
  • Streatham Common: 17.55-18.10 seven parties of house martins over SW; in total 116 birds. (Peter Newmark).
  • Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park: 11 Swallows S @ 1230, also Chiffchaff, male Blackcap, 2 Goldcrests (Bob Watts).
  • Vauxhall Cross: 1 male Peregrine [towards Westminister] 10:30am (Michael Mac).
  • Vicarage Farm (Enfield): 6 Yellowhammer, together, 13:40 hrs (Robert Callf).
  • Wimbledon Common: 1 male Tawny Owl calling (15:35), 12+ migratory Jays. (J. Dickerson)

  • Alexandra Park: 32 R N Parakeets in flocks of 12 & 20, 13+ Chiffchaffs, few Blackcap, 2 Mipit, 4 Grey Wagtail, 2 Alba Wagtails, Siskin south 0818, Swallow south, 2 House Martins SW (Bob Watts).
  • Beddington SF: 2 Ruff, 1 Greenshank, 5 Green Sandpiper, 2 Wheatear, 3 Yellow Wagtail, 40+ Swallow, 20+ House Martin, 70+ Teal, 50+ Shoveler (PA) few pics
  • Brent Reservoir: 4 Wigeon, 1 Hobby, 9 Jackdaws S, 60+ House Martins, 7 Swallows, 14+ Chiffchaff (Roy Beddard, Andrew Verrall)
  • Crayford Marshes: Curlew Sandpiper near the flood barrier at high tide roost. Golden Plover, Whinchat, Wheatear, 38 Common Tern, Lesser Whitethroat, Cetti's Warbler, Greenshank, Stonechat, 2 Snipe, Kingfisher. (Kev Jarvis).
  • Crossness: 2 Roseate Terns (adult + 1st winter) off the Golf Centre 15.40 till dusk, juvenile Garganey with Teal on foreshore off Crossness Engines, c40 Common Terns (c10 hanging around and 29 flew west in a tight flock about 18.00, 11 Black-tailed Godwits, 3+ Yellow-legged Gulls, Common Sandpiper (Rich Bonser, John Archer et al). 5 Avocets this morning in Barking Bay then off Golf Cemtre (Ian Miller).
  • East India Dock Basin / Bow Creek Ecology Park: c.85 Common Teal, 7 Tufted Duck, Sparrowhawk, 6 Commom Sandpiper (high tide roost), 3 Common Gull, 30 Common Tern W, Northern Wheatear, 3 Meadow Pipit NE, 3 Chiffchaff (Gary A James, Nick Tanner).
  • Hampstead Heath: no sign of Pectoral Sandpiper at Highgate No 1 Pond by 8am (Gareth Richards).
  • Hornsey: steady Swallow passage south; c40 1100-dusk (Bob Watts).
  • Lake Farm CP, Hayes: 5 Spotted Flycatchers along footpath to canal, single Whinchat and Stonechat, 6 Skylarks and 7 Swallows flew S (Glenn Longstaff, Peter Naylor).
  • Park Farm (Enfield): 1 Common Whitethroat (quite late) (Robert Callf).
  • Regent's Park: possible adult Whiskered Tern apparently seen by Alex Berryman at 0930 then flew west. Reputedly again at 1420 then drifted east but RBA were not prepared to broadcast this without independent verification. (Bob Watts).
  • South Lodge Farm (Enfield): 1 Whinchat, on wooden fencing, 13:15 hrs; 21 Meadow Pipit (Robert Callf).

  • Stoke Newington Reservoirs: Water Rail in cropped reeds, reed bunting, reed warbler (JP/TB)
  • Ten Acre Wood area: m Pheasant, Buzzard hunting low in field near shooting club, Sparrowhawk, up to 4 Hobbies (min 3 different birds), Kestrel, 4 Swallows, Wheatear, 3 Chiffchaff, 6 Goldcrests, 5 Rooks (coming into woods for acorns) (Neil Anderson)
  • Totteridge Valley: 1 Whinchat, 1 Stonechat, 1 Hobby, 13 House Martin, 25 Swallows, 2 Common Buzzard, 2 Kestrel, Sparrowhawk, Little Owl, 25+ Stock Doves, 4 Meadow Pipit, 6 Chiffchaff, 3 Bullfinch, 10 Siskins, 1 Linnet (Ian Ellis).

  • Alexandra Park: Drake Gadwall again Tunnel Res (just 3rd record of the year!), Mipit, 5 Chiffchaffs, Blackcap, large mixed tit flock above Rose Garden contained 3 Coal Tits and 2 Goldcrests, 3 Shoveler Boating Lake (Bob Watts).
  • Barking Bay: Wryneck briefly in scrub, 2 Wheatear, 2 Whinchat, Knot, 2 Common Sandpiper, 2 Hobby, Cetti's Warbler.(Paul Hawkins, Dave Morrison)
  • Brent Reservoir: 6 Wigeon, 1 Lapwing, 1 Green Sandpiper, 1 Little Egret, 2 Common Tern, 6 House Martin, 2 Yellow Wagtail (on rafts 12.15), 6+ Chiffchaff (Roy Beddard, Steve Leeke, Andrew Verrall).
  • Clapham Common: Turf area: 1 imm White Wagtail amoungst 5 Pied Wagtails well spread out in singles, 4 Swallows over. Mount Pond: 7 Cormorants - 2 doing courtship display. since the council installed several platforms Cormorants have increased massively - before modifications mainly singles seen, 3 Swallows over pond could have been same seen earlier? 2 Grey Herons, family 4 Egyptian Geese mid afternoon (Michael Mac).
  • Crayford Marshes: Curlew Sandpiper feeding near the flood Barrier, Little Owl, Lesser Whitethroat, 2 Wheatear, 8 Yellow-legged Gull, 2 Cetti's Warbler, 4 Common Sandpiper, 12 Redshank, 9 Black-tailed Godwit, 6 Jackdaw, 4 Rook. (Kev Jarvis).
  • Fulham Reach (Thames low tide count): 2 Pied Wagtail, 1 Grey Wagtail, 96 Black-headed Gull, 1 Great Black-backed Gull, 9 Lesser Black-backed Gull, 12 Herring Gull, 94 Mallard, 23 Tufted Duck, 21 Teal, 2 Moorhen, 1 Coot, 4 Mute Swan, 1 Canada Goose, 3 Egyptian Goose, 12 Cormorant inc poss White-Breasted one (Nathalie Mahieu)

  • London Wetland Centre: Yellowhammer over calling at c0850 (E); 5+ Meadow Pipits (Matthew Palmer)
  • Queen Mary Reservoir: 21 Black Tern, Lesser Whitethroat (Steve Chastell)
  • Regents Park: Whiskered Tern reported in afternoon and evening?
  • Stanmore: Swift south-west c09.00 (D. McKenzie).
  • Streatham (in vicinity of Oakdale road (walking to and from the shop)): 1 Jay, 1 Greater spotted woodpecker, 1 Robin, 1 Blue tit, 17 Wood pigeons, 16 feral pigeons, 5 Crows, 5 Ring necked parakeets (over). (R Bell)

  • Blackheath: For the second time in 3 days, Ring-necked Parakeets eating brick/mortar from buildings (for minerals to aid their digestion?) (Joe Beale) We see this behaviour at Wormwood Scrubs too (Charlie Farrell). I saw this for the first time on Sept 18th, on the A206 Erith Rd near Holly Hill, London Borough of Bexley (Chris Rose).
  • Clapham Common; 1 Immature Wheatear(patch tick) on gravel circus ground wouldn't have seen if hadn't walked across got down to about 7metres at 6pm, 5 Pied Wagtails turf area one very grey -not sure if White Wagtail? Mount Pond, 5 Cormorant highest ever, 2 Grey Herons, 2 times 20+ flocks Green and Goldfinches, 101+ Starlings nice to hear singing also wheeling about, also about 30+ Starlings singing on church tower on edge of common (Michael Mac). Good work on the Wheatear, we had one last week. The White Wagtail (I think there are two adults and one juv + about 12 Pied scattered around) are quite distrinctive, see online ID stuff, just google White Wagtail identifiaction.   • Clapham Common: 8am 2 x Medow Pipit with Pied Wagtails on relaid turf. 5 Chiffchaff scattered around. Good numbers of Swallows (20+ observed per hour) over throughout the day.

  • Dagenham Chase LNR: 1 very late Common Swift flew west with a good passage of Swallows & House Martins, also 1 Whinchat and 1 Lesser Whitethroat. ( V.Halley-Frame ).

  • East India Dock Basin / Bow Creek Ecology Park: 90 Teal, 2 Tufted Duck, Peregrine, Common Sandpiper, 23 Sand Martin west, Meadow Pipit over, 6 Chiffchaff, 2 Linnet (Nick Tanner).
  • Greenwich Park: From late morning until around 3pm, a big hirundine movement (hundreds) W on a broad front. Mostly Swallows with House Martins. Didn't have a chance to do prolonged counts, but 90+ in 25 minutes between 13.50 and 14.15 and 70+ in 25 minutes between 14.30 and 14.55 (Joe Beale)

  • Richmond Park: 1 Kingfisher and 1 Grey Wagtail at SW corner of smaller Pen Pond.   • Crossness: 3 adult Arctic Skuas (2 pale, 1 dark) high south over golf course 1225, Honey Buzzard (pale juv) south at 1630, 7 Black Terns, juv Arctic Tern, Bar-tailed Godwit, 4 Black-tailed Godwits, Common Buzzard east at 1515, 3 Hobbies (juv hunting over nature reserve, 2 including a juv south 1630-1700), 2 Yellow-legged Gulls (ad + juv), 20+ Common Terns, Willow Warbler, 4 Chiffchaffs, 29 Swallows south (John Archer).
  • Elephant & Castle: Peregrine Falcon (juvenile) again on the "ladyshave" tower at 8.30. (Andrew Birks).
  • East Quay, Discovery Way, Shadwell E1 (just west of Shadwell Basin): eclipse drake Pintail in good condition, no rings visible under fairly clear waterline, refused to come to my kids' bread and kept its distance; there at 8.45, had gone by 9.15, though Mallards were still there - so, either wild, not hungry or won't let anything other than ciabatta pass its lamellae. Also Common Gull on nearby Thames foreshore (Dasvid Callahan).
  • Greenwich Park: 0645-0810: 2 Grey Wagtails (W), 8 Yellow Wagtails(S), 38+ Meadow Pipits (most S), 2 Siskins (S), 100+ Swallow/House Martin, seemingly headed SE/E, still 2 Spotted Flycatchers, Blackcaps, singing Chiffchaffs, 1 Common Buzzard lowish flapping N @ 10.15. 1 Jay examined Garden Spider web and found where it was attached to tree leaves, searched the leaves and found and ate the spider! Also a few Swallows moving early evening with 6 west around 5pm.(Joe Beale)

  • Richmond Park: 1 Redstart in gorse near Holly lodge mid pm. (Mike Lewis) 1 Northern Wheatear Holly Lodge old riding ring late pm (Tim Howard) probably the same bird Justin Quail had early morning and failed to identify. (per Franko Maroevic) I was absent today, so it became an unconfirmed report of possible Isabelline Wheatear at Holly Lodge in riding paddock, late morning (RBA). This report does not seem to have originated from any of the regular local birders (T. Howard via J. Wilczur).???? I think I'm glad these people don't say hello when they see other birders in the park.

  • Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park: Male Firecrest singing, calling, hovering and generallly showing superbly in mixed tit flock and chasing one of the 2 Chiffchaffs contained within between High and Cherry Glades, also 2 Goldcrests east of Cantrell Field, 2 Southern Hawkers, 2 R N Parakeets. Hopefully will stay for winter - think this is 5 out of the last 6 autumn/winters with this species present (Bob Watts)

It only take a couple of seconds longer to write Great Black-backed Gull rather than GBB Gull, or Spotted Flycatcher rather than Spot Fly.   • William Girling Reservoir: 11:00 2 Sabine's gulls. the KG bird was present from 7:30am on the South Basin with 5 Arctic Terns, it later moved to Girling where 2 sabine's gulls were together with 7 arctic & 1 black tern along the east bank, The KG bird with its full hood & the 2nd bird with a hood but white forehead. both distant and still present at 11:15am at least. Also little gull, dunlin, 2 greenshank, 2 common sandpipers, 1 perigrine & 1 shag with 86 cormorant (J.Murray). All -attached photo on this website, believe cld be an arctic tern?? very hard with small lens at range to see what I was taking, can only confirm 2 sabs gulls were viewed for periods of time with clear id, and this photo may not represent the 2nd bird I tried to capture. that said as the single observer of the 2 gulls (others saw the KG bird early morning heading south) happy to just keep as a personal record - thanks all & happy birding.

  • Crayford Marshes: Curlew Sandpiper feeding on the Thames foreshore, 2 Hobby, Little Owl, 2 Black-tailed Godwit, 6 Greenshank, 6 Yellow-legged Gull, Green Sandpiper, Yellow Wagtail, 10 Dunlin, 28 Ringed Plover. (Kev Jarvis).
  • Gordon Hill Station, Enfield: 10 Feral Rock Dove, including juvenile (Robert Callf).
  • Hampstead Heath: 0730-0830. Pair Whinchat (f/j) in fenced RSPB meadow area on Parliament Hill. Still there 1015 (ADH). 1930 2 Hobbies feeding actively high above the Highgate Ponds, plus a very late Swift (Sash Tusa)
  • Lake Farm CP: Common Buzzard flew S 12.10, Hobby flew S, 11 Swallows over, single Wheatear and Lesser Whitethoat, 4 Common Whitethroat, 3 Blackcaps, 3 Chiffchaffs, 8 Reed Buntings, Red Admiral, Comma, Holly Blue, 2 Migrant Hawkers and too many dog walkers (Pete Naylor).
  • Lee Valley, Cornmill Meadows: 1 Ruff, 8 Green Sandpiper, 1 Common Sandpiper, 25 Lapwing, 1 Snipe, 13 Teal, 10 Swallow, 30 House Martin (Simon Papps).
  • London Wetland Centre: reported juvenile Whiskered Tern with 20 Black Terns on Main Lake from 12:45 to 12:50 then flew off (Birdguides) [NB. did not reappear in afternoon]; 16 Black Tern 2pm-4pm, flyover Sand Martin, Buzzard, Sparrowhawk (M Bournat, et al.); 16 Black Terns present 1800, 3 Ruff most of day (Angus Innes);

  • Regent's Park: 0715-0745, 10+ Willow Warblers following larger "fall" yesterday, Chiffchaff, Mistle Thrush, Whitethroat (Sash Tusa)

  • Alexandra Park: Female Common Redstart and Spotted Flycatcher still present in elms in Cricket Scrub, also 10+ Blackcap, 2 Whitethroat, 5+ Chiffchaffs in mixed flock perimeter, Yellow Wagtail high SW 0700 (Bob Watts, James Palmer); singing Willow Warbler by platform 3, and 3 Spotted flycatchers in CS at 08.45 (David Callahan).
  • Brent Res  : Curlew in off, Greenshank in off, 3 Green Sands, 3 Common Sands, 3 Lapwing, 5 raptor day: Common Buzzard circling 11.40, male Peregrine, Hobby, Kes & Sprawk (Roy Beddard, John Gravatt, Andrew Verrall, Lydia Willocks).
  • East India Dock area: Curlew over 10.55 then east, Sparrowhawk, 16 Common Tern, Chiffchaff, Reed Warbler. (Gary A James).
