Highlights of the monthEdit

September's star bird was London's first BAILLON'S CRAKE since 1891. A juvenile spent at least 16 days creeping about in a small reed bed conveniently close to the Shooting Butts Hide at the RSPB's Rainham Marshes reserve. First seen on Friday 7th, it showed itself intermittently every day until Saturday 22nd, with a disputed sighting on the following day. On Monday 10th, two experienced birders waiting for a glimpse of the crake found themselves looking instead at an Aquatic Warbler. On Wednesday 5th a Pectoral Sandpiper spent the day at Lockwood Reservoir and on Tuesday 25th two Pecs were found at Rainham Marshes (while another spent three days at Dorney, just outside the LNHS recording area, in the middle of the month). A Great White Egret was seen at Beddington on Sunday 23th and another (or the same?) was at Amwell on Tuesday 25th. Three Arctic Skua were seen from Rainham Marshes on Monday 24th. Another was spotted over the Thames at Crayford Marshes on Tuesday 25th, and on the same day a Long-tailed Skua flew over Beddington. On Friday 28th (although not reported until three weeks later) a Manx Shearwater was found exhausted and released at the Long Water in Kensington Gardens. On Sunday 23rd a juvenile Sabine’s Gull was seen over the Thames at Beckton and the same bird (presumably) was seen from Crayford Marshes and Rainham Marshes on the following day. A juvenile Garganey was found on the south basin of Staines Reservoir on Saturday 22nd; it then moved to the west bank of the north basin, where it could still be found at the end of the month. Garganey were also seen briefly at Rainham Marshes, Beddington SF and London Wetland Centre earlier in the month. Saturday 29th produced a Honey Buzzard observed flying west from two Hornsey gardens independently by two observers at the southern end of Alexandra Park.

Sunday 30th September 2012Edit

  • Alexandra Park: Brambling south 0725, Hobby NE 0830, immature Rook north, 1 possibly 2 Reed Buntings, Spotted Flycatcher Lower Slopes, also 53 Meadow Pipits, 23 Siskins, 250+ House Martins especially from 1030 over The Grove, 7 Swallows, 5 Grey Wagtails, 3 Alba Wagtails, 25+ Chaffinches, c15 Greenfinch, 3 Linnets, 9 Chiffchaffs, 2 Blackcaps, 8 Jackdaws (Bob Watts).
  • Barking Outfall: 320 House Martin, 5 Sand Martin, Yellow Wagtail, Rock Pipit, 227 Teal, 2 Common Sandpiper, Oystercatcher, 34 Meadow Pipit, Redwing and a Kingfisher.(Dave Morrison)

  • Brent Reservoir: 6 Wigeon, 2 Lapwing, 3 Snipe, Hobby, Yellow Wagtail, 4 Pied Wagtail, 2 Jackdaw, 6 Swallow, 34 House Martin, 5 Sand Martin, 38 Chaffinch, 6 Siskins (Brent Birders).
  • Brookmill Park: Mandarin, Great Spotted Woodpecker, 2 Chiffchaff (Conrad Ellam) Although only seen briefly this morning, I am now convinced that the large Gull in the park is some sort of argentatus Herring with pale yellow rather than flesh coloured legs. I have therefor deleted my recents reports of Yellow-legged Gull. No sign of the gull at 10am, but 1 Kingfisher, 2 Jay in addition to the above. Conrad: what was the primary tip pattern on the gull? (James Lowen). I went to have a look at the gull and it seems as though it is a near-adult Lesser Black-backed Gull graellsii; also 2 House Martins (Richard Bonser). Possibly though, there has been a rather pale Lesser Blackback visiting the Park occasionally as well. It's difficult to judge the mantle colour with single gulls, easier if there are a few Herrings etc around for comparison. Haven't seen the primary pattern with the wings open.
  • Crayford Marshes: 3 Black-Tailed Godwit, 10+ Ringed Plover, 2 Little Egret, Redshank, possible Common Sandpiper (NickS).
