Highlights of the monthEdit

Only a couple of rarities were twitchable in September — an immature Common Rosefinch discovered at Wormwood Scrubs early on the 8th, and still showing well the next day, and a Wryneck found at Wanstead Flats on the 3rd and staying at least till the 9th. Less rare but also twitchable was a juvenile Ruff that lingered at Brent Reservoir from the 2nd to the 14th. During a two-and-a-half-hour period on the 11th, five Arctic Skua and one Pomarine Skua flew SW past the London Wetland Centre. A Razorbill was seen heading up the Thames into London on the 29th and a Guillemot was reported on the river in central London on the 30th. A Fulmar was also on the river on those dates. On the 12th, six Spoonbill were seen flying over West Putney and then Richmond Park. Two Common Crane circled over the lake at Beddington Farmlands for 15 minutes on the 19th, and on the 30th a Great White Egret flew over Brent Reservoir. The juvenile Garganey found in August at the London Wetland Centre lingered until the 29th, while the number at Brent Reservoir increased to five on the 18th, with none seen after the 22nd. A female Long-tailed Duck appeared at Walthamstow’s Banbury Reservoir on the 28th — could this be the bird that spent much of the summer in Rotherhithe? Four Osprey and two Honey Buzzard were recorded passing over London during the month. A male Red-footed Falcon flew low over the London Wetland Centre on the 21st. The season’s first Jack Snipe was found at the same site on the 26th. Wood Sandpiper were seen at three sites early in the month. The autumn hirundine passage continued, with Swallow and House Martin numbers peaking on the 22nd and 23rd, which also saw the last record of Sand Martin. The last reported Swift was over Brent Reservoir on the 18th. Throughout the month there were many reports of migrant passerines — too many to mention here. A Lapland Bunting was seen briefly at Beddington SF on the 13th, and the first Redwing of the autumn was spotted in Enfield on the 24th.
