Site of the Month: Staines ReservoirEdit

I wish I could have illustrated this monthly round-up with a photograph or two, but not a single image has been added to the wiki in weeks — perhaps because a change to the wiki’s structure this year makes it less obvious how to upload your images (just click on New and then NewPictures). Please consider showing off your best photos here rather than just posting links to other websites.

Having got that off my chest, I am not sure what to suggest as Bird of the Month for September. However, there can be only one candidate for Birding Site of the Month — Staines Reservoir, where the drained south basin has attracted an amazing array of waders. Not only did August’s Pectoral Sandpiper hang around well into September but it was joined or followed by more than a score of other shorebird species, including rarities in small but significant numbers and commoner waders en masse.

Among the rarer birds were a Red-necked Phalarope and a Grey Phalarope, each of which graced the site for four days (overlapping for one day). In total, 23 wader species were reported (and the tally may well have been higher because the postings do not include Lapwing and Common Snipe, both of which were probably seen but deemed too boring to mention).

In BOU-approved taxonomic sequence, here is a list of the waders reported from Staines during the month, with maximum counts in parentheses: Avocet (11), Oystercatcher (1), Golden Plover (3), Grey Plover (2), Ringed Plover (97), Whimbrel (2), Black-tailed Godwit (6), Bar-tailed Godwit (1), Turnstone (2), Knot (4), Ruff (14), Curlew Sandpiper (8), Sanderling (3), Dunlin (55), Little Stint (10), Pectoral Sandpiper (1), Red-necked Phalarope (1), Grey Phalarope (1), Common Sandpiper (2), Green Sandpiper (2), Spotted Redshank (1), Greenshank (5), Redshank (8). Some of the rarer species on that list (including Curly Sand, Ruff, Grey Phal and Spotshank) were also seen at other wetland sites, but Staines clearly deserves the limelight.

Muddled Manxies Edit

A Manx Shearwater was at King George V Reservoir on the 13th. Three days earlier a dead Manxie was found in Surbiton and on the 15th a grounded bird was discovered near Kings Cross and taken into care.

For a pelagic species, the Manxie has produced a surprising number of London records. Reports are mainly in autumn after windy weather and usually involve young birds, which are often found disorientated, distressed, debilitated, disabled or deceased. Records in recent years include a frazzled bird found in a communal bin-shed in Paddington in 2008, a bird befuddled enough to be caught and eaten by a Great Black-backed Gull near the M25 Dartford Crossing in 2009, and a pooped bird picked up in Kensington Gardens in 2012.

Other water-loving birds Edit

Apart from the wealth of waders at Staines, the month’s most twitchable water-loving birds were a Spotted Crake that showed itself frequently at Hornchurch CP from the 16th and a Red-necked Grebe at the lake in Roding Valley Meadows LNR from the 22nd.

A Glossy Ibis flew over Walthamstow Reservoirs on the 16th and then spent the next two days at the London Wetland Centre. This site also hosted a Cattle Egret on the 25th. Three White Stork flew high over Totteridge Valley on the 2nd, a Bittern was at Amwell GP on the 9th, and two Spoonbill visited Rainham Marshes on the 18th.

Arctic Skua were seen over Staines and Pimlico, and the month’s star tern was a White-winged Black Tern that tarried at Tyttenhanger for six days.

Birds of prey Edit

Many wader-watchers at Staines Reservoir had the pleasure of also spotting a young female Merlin that spent the whole month in the area. Elsewhere there were a few sightings of Honey Buzzard, Marsh Harrier, Hen Harrier, Goshawk, Osprey and Short-eared Owl.

Passerines and near-passerines Edit

The month’s only near-passerine of note was a Wryneck at Amwell GP on the 7th. A Red-backed Shrike spent a couple of days at Wormwood Scrubs and Yellow-browed Warbler were reported from four London locations towards the end of the month. Otherwise there was just the usual package of passage passerines, including the autumn’s first Ring Ouzel on the 26th. With winter clearly on the way, Redwing and Fieldfare also began to appear towards the end of the month.

So what delights might October bring? We’ll have to wait and see.
